China authorities have ordered online video game operators to allow parents to monitor their children's gaming activity. Gaming companies have until March 1 to comply with a new set of guidelines issued by the Ministry of Public Security and seven other government departments.

it actually sounds quite reasonable until you read that they're only allowed 2 hours per week and $1.50 on gaming!!!!! i personally don't spend any monthly money but that's hardly anything... i mean, i can't even think of a game that only costs that much!!!

I lived in China briefly around the time of the Sega Saturn/Playstation...

1 Sega Saturn/Playstation game was about $1.50... but keep in mind, it is a HK bootleg...

They're only getting 10 rmb/1.50 usd to buy games. that's barely enough for a bottle of soda now. (was in China for a week or so a few months back)

......unless all you buy are bootlegs.

Thats just stereotypical.
I got my Lime green Japanese DSi for ¥1,500. Which is 220 USD.
Well, I got it in Guangzhou in April 2009, so go figure.

The guidlines for parents suggest that they only allow 2 and half hours a week play and $1.50 a month for games. Not that they have to stick to that.

The companies are having to set up tools to allow parents to monitor these things easily.

All seems reasonable to me and probably a good idea.

I'd personally like to see parents been prosecuted for supplying their kids unsuitable games and neglecting them to the point that they get "addicted" to games, and especially harshly when they try to sue about it. Steps like this would stop parents from been able to shift the blame for their bad parenting onto games companies.
