CMA regulator says that Call of Duty would not be able to run on Nintendo Switch

saddsad.png

In an amusing twist in the ongoing effort by Microsoft to acquire Activision, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority has determined that the contract that Microsoft signed last month to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms would not be able to be upheld as-is. They denote that publishers and developers have had harder times porting games to the Switch versus PlayStation and Xbox, and that games ported to Switch usually had rather poor performance or visuals. Additionally, they also denote that while the Switch "has not impacted Nintendo's ability to compete on the downstream console market" as it features a wider variety of games than PlayStation or Xbox, they believe that the Switch "does not currently offer the same graphically intensive games that PlayStation or Xbox compete on" and that it "does not offer a similar user experience" to the competition in regards to storage space, visuals and performance.
Ideally, Microsoft is signing this contract for the purpose of bringing it to a future Nintendo console, but they would not be able to actually abide by the contract until then.

Well let's see, a 10 year agreement. Will Nintendo Switch be around in 10 years? What about 5? Obviously the answer is NO.

I'm sorry but this is a complete garbage. Call of Duty is a franchise with lots of games. Microsoft could request a port of Call of Duty Mobile (android) anytime they want for Switch or even make a Remaster of Black Ops or any successful game in the past. Wii had COD. The contract does not specify what games Microsoft/Xbox would bring for any Nintendo Platform or even if they would be in the current generation or next they could very well "launch" as a internet streaming service like Resident Evil 7 or Kingdom Hearts. Would run like shit? Yes but this would meet the terms in the contract. I do think CMA need to do an unbiased and broad research before giving a public note like this.

Nah I think we need to avoid cloud games in general especially if its online heavy to boot
Sure Sure. Getting no-scope sniped in 15fps is what we all wanted.... :wtf:

Nonsense.

Wii had Modern Warfare, Wii U had Black Ops 2... But the Switch can't run CoD? Bullshit.

The U.K. is running into a lot of bullshit lately.

Considering how poorly the new games in the COD series run on the base PS4 and especially the Xbox One S (where both are superior in hardware specs to the Switch) he's not entirely wrong.

I can't imagine the new games in the series running on a console lower than the PS4 in specs without a drastic reduction in the scope of the series.

I mean it makes plenty of sense why the current generation of COD games wouldn't run on the Switch through porting it. Not to mention the Switch is on it's last leg I think, based on what were seeing. Hell, I half expect that this deal that Microsoft and Nintendo are trying to make refers to Nintendo's Next-Gen console they've been working on. There's always the CLOUD, I mean there's been plenty of games that have gone that way:

  • A Plague Tale: Innocence - Cloud Version
  • The Forgotten City - Cloud Version
  • Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cloud Version
  • Kingdom Hearts - HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix - Cloud Version
  • Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue - Cloud Version
  • Kingdom Hearts III - Cloud Version
  • Edge of Eternity - Cloud Version
  • Thymesia - Cloud Version
  • Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
  • A Plague Tale: Requiem - Cloud Version
  • Resident Evil Village Cloud
  • Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Cloud
  • Resident Evil 2 - Cloud Version
  • Resident Evil 3 - Cloud Version
  • Dying Light 2: Stay Human - Cloud Version (Release date: TBA)

So if they did that, then I'm sure it could work, I believe. Allot of these games on this list a pretty graphics heavy, and look and run pretty well on the Switch being there all on the Cloud.
Cloud games suck. I had forgotten they existed until I read this post.

Well if the next switch is out in 2024 this won’t be anything to worry about.
Have you not played Doom 2016 on the Switch?

I personally think it's because they want to make the game look as lifelike as possible (which is not something they were so pushy about in the Wii era) and they feasibly could not with the Switch's current specs

And who said they want to bring mainline games or they will release CoD on Switch? They can bring Call of Duty Mobile, older titles as remasters, made separate release or wait for new console to upheld agreement.
Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, and World at War would be great.

Life-like? Realism in games have made them so dull and bland for me.

So call of duty on switch is going to be a cloud version huh? Not that I care too much, but that's just sad. Can the switch run the xbox one version of killer instinct? Cause would really be nice to have that on there. Or even the SNES nintendo 64 version. It is owned by microsoft after all, and we do have banjo kazooie on switch already.

Or Nintend can just release a console upgrade. That works too. :ninja:

That is true, unfortunately; it's kind of hard to make a realistic game look not like any other realistic game, which is probably why games with stylized art styles have been so popular

You know? I grew up with the NES and Game Boy, then SNES, GB Color, Nintendo 64, GBA, and so on. I have never been a bitch about "graphic performance". Even today, every now and then I play Super Mario Bros. 3 (for naming one of many) and just enjoy what a good game is. I recently played Skyrim on Switch, I got no problem with the graphics. I think that the problem was born when people started bitching out about "FPS, maximum graphics performance" etc.

Yes we all like a good looking game, but we, as players, enjoy the SOUL of the game, not if it looks great or what. To this day my favorite wrestling game is WWF No Mercy, and oh the graphical topic has aged as bad as hell, but is one of the funniest games to play. I prefer 100 times to play a match in that old, horrible-looking game than the garbage that is for example 2K18.

People need to get their heads out of their asses and stop arguing about graphics and start enjoying a good game.

I didn't see anyone bitching about the DLC's that they now shove down our throats, I didn't see anyone when they started charging for playing online, etc. Those are moments when we needed to rise our voices but we didn't. And now, a game that is "not stable 60 FPS" is bad. That thinking is just lame to me. Back in my day, we just enjoyed good games.

Just my 2 cents.

That's such an old school yard argument that sadly still hasn't died out since the days of the SNES and Genesis. You had one side saying pretty graphics, Donkey Kong Country, "the colors" and then the other side saying faster gameplay, tougher AI, and "more mature" games.

Bottom line is: it's doesn't matter how pretty the games look today, what matters is how well they will play 10-20 years from now. Long live Super Mario Bros. 3 and every other retro game that's still being picked up and enjoyed by kids today.

Yep and this cloud version is the future of the switch (and AAA publisher abandonment) if Nintendo doesn't get their shit together and stop resting on their laurels

I hope CoD goes MS-exclusive, Jesus Christ sony needs to get their head out of their asses and start pumping new interesting games

They have Resistance, Killzone, SOCOM, and even MAG to compete. Time to bring them the fuck out of the woodwork
