Denuvo unveils new technology "TraceMark" aimed to watermark and easily trace leaked games

denuvo.png

Denuvo by Irdeto has unveiled at GDC (Game Developers Conference) this past March 18th their brand new anti-piracy technology named "TraceMark", specifically tailored to make "leakers think twice".

This new technology is aimed towards the never-ending problem in the gaming industry of pre-release videogame leaks, be it press releases, distributed review copies or broken street dates. The watermark technology which Denuvo unveiled is apparently already trusted by Hollywood, paid-TV and sports leagues. Quoting Denuvo's own blogpost about the technology:

Denuvo's TraceMark post said:
It introduces a deterrent effect by enabling the precise tracing of leaked content back to its source. This capability makes potential leakers think twice, knowing that any unauthorized distribution can be directly linked to them.

This brand new technology will be platform-agnostic, meaning it can be implemented in different systems as long as the game has the technology integrated into it, and so far it seems to be compatible with Xbox, iOS, Windows and Nintendo Switch . It aims to "incorporate both invisible and visible watermarking techniques".

Currently there's no set date on when this new technology will begin to be rolled out, but it's most likely that game developers will start getting access to this implementation soon.

I wonder what happened to their Switch port of Denuvo. Did they ever add their protection in first-party titles, or was it something they falsely admitted to drive up attention?
To be honest, considering that Switch 2 is almost knocking the door, I believe Nintendo or Denuvo (maybe both) decided to focus the Anti-Piracy tools to work on the NEW console, reather on implementing it now on the "last few games" to be released on Switch this year.

I know the new console will only comes next year, but we can count with one hand the first party games Nintendo will release, probably it wont be total worth to implement it now

Let’s just went back to arcades already. But with paid time, handcuffs, verification, personal data and paycard data with no guarantees. To play under very close observation from a specialist from Microsoft or else. Because without all these measures corporats will loose their precious cents.
Guess I fed up with game industry. I would go eat some mushrooms and watch my wallpapers.

Imagine how good the games industry would be if they spent even half the money they spend on trying and failing to stop piracy and instead just focused on making good games.

This urge to farm infinite money makes them lose money as the time goes by
Unfortunatly the avarage gamer who's not used to learn about these things will continue to buy these game, but I believe that this is chaging... like turtle steps

I seriously wonder how a corporation which's business model is pissing off everyone managed to survive.

Not one thing they put out was helping anyone except Irdeto's wallets. We get invasive, always-online DRM, the devs get complaints about heavily limited performance.

As PC gamer, Denuvo is my public enemy and fuck to Denuvo.

Doubtful, Nintendo would rather to make Switch 2 unhackable as much as possible than resort to impose Denuvo on games.

If Switch 2 is hacked so Nintendo will patch the bootrom like they did with Switch after mid 2018, and congrat, your Switch 2 is hacked for good. Denuvo? Up in the air and third party publishers may attempt to impose but if Switch 2 OS don't support run the Denuvo so nothing for publishers to do but some may not bother to release new games until Nintendo take action.

Denuvo and Easy-anti cheat can go fuck themselves!
It is very annoying to see publishers put easy anti-cheat on games that are purely single player, so Ubisoft is notorious with this.

I can't express myself when 343i annouced that Halo Infinite will implement EAC in the game. I REALLY GOT ANGRY AT THAT.

how is this even new, other than it being work, why did people not put identifying files in the distributed games from the start?
at least on pc, that'd only make sense.
on consoles, it clearly doesnt work that easily

Is it any wonder why I still continue to play games made in the 2000-2020 range, mostly? Those two decades had plenty of games that still remain fantastic to this day - Pokémon was at its best until 2013, Xenoblade 2 and Definitive were released near the end, the 3D remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (as well as The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and A Link Between Worlds), Ghost Trick, Ōkami, Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, Bravely Default/Second, Ghost of Tsushima, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden, and plenty more.

I've got a huge library of brilliant "retro" games that I'd recommend to anyone, far above the derogatory and demeaning turds being released recently that are designed to be as anti-customer and anti-gamer as possible.
So yeah, even if I stopped buying new games completely, I'd still have a laundry-list of fun games to enjoy - not to mention the emulators and ROMs (and ROM hacks) I've downloaded over the years, that will still work regardless of Nintendo's iron fist.

Fuck Denuvo, fuck DEI, fuck Nintendo, etc. - I'm good as it is. Heck, I'm currently playing through Torna: The Golden Country, which is a 2018 game, and I intend on playing through XC: Definitive (2020) afterwards.

It's really sad.. Can't imagine they think it does anything.. The Master Chief Collection is RIDDLED with cheaters. What does it even do? It's a false sense of security, both for 343 and unknowing gamers. IT SUCKS.

I was opening my Infinite but my friend said to me "bro you really sure you wannt open this game right now?" because of these lastest bad news regards to EAC (that APEX drama and etc)

now im sad because i wanna play Infinite (becaus its gameplay is pleasent) but im afraid of baing hacked, even tho EAC posted on twitter about this saying the root of the problem is not EAC but APEX (but who knows, eh)

Maybe this will be something like Cinavia (remember that on the PS3?) where it listened for a silent audio signal and blocked playback if that signal wasn't there (It's been a while, my recollection is a little hazy on how it worked). But anyway, I'm envisioning this as a means of tracing, for example, the person who leaked the gameplay from TLoU2, rather than finding the guy who snuck a copy of Zelda out of a Walmart warehouse.

I'm probably in the minority, but I think it's a good idea to watermark review copies to help identify leakers. Early leak of a game contributes to make pirates look even worse than their already bad reputation. It's not fair to the legit users, who have to wait for the release date. It also infuriates game companies and makes them do extreme retaliations (like DMCA some emulators or github pages). All that for the sake of playing a game a week earlier than release date. Not worth it. I can easily wait for release date to play a new game, since my backlog is huge anyways. I don't think a simple watermark would negatively affect performance for the regular users, but I'm no expert.
