I recently got a broken New 2DS XL with the beloved popping issue.

When powering the device on, the screens stay black, the blue light comes on for a few seconds and then it goes out together with an audible pop from the speakers.

Internet tells me, this is due to some hardware not being detected/some ribbon cables not being connected.

Sadly, someone before me already opened the device up, and apparently wasn't too careful about it.

Both screen cables look kinda rough, but I can't see any real damage to them (doesn't mean there isn't). But the connector of the flex cable between the top screen and the game module slot is almost completely pulled off. I think that's the connector for the NFC antenna. Can that one cause the popping issue when it's not connected correctly?

What other ribbon cables can cause that issue?

Is there any way to diagnose which one is faulty, short of buying all replacement parts and plugging them in one at a time?

As to your question, yes, the 3DS needs both screens to be connected in order to boot normally, if a ribbon cable is loose, damaged or both, it will result in it turning off immediately and giving that speaker "popping" sound..
Since you got the system in this condition, did you get the system super cheap and you ate trying to fix knowing that it has issues, or the seller whoever that is didn't tell you and only now you are finding out about it, if the latter i'd suggest returning it and asking for a refund. Otherwise, if you got it hoping you could fix it, get ready for some thorough troubleshooting..

There's a reason to why you created two separate threads with the exact same text?
I wrote the post while not being logged in. When I submitted it, it sent me to login and after that back to the post creation window. So I figured it hadn't created the post yet. So I recreated it. But apparently, it silently did create the post the first time round. So, no, no real reason from my side.

I got it as defective, with that issue. Internet said, that in most cases it's just a cable that's loose, and I've had quite good success with buying defective consoles and fixing them before (e.g. I got a 3DS with a broken charge port for €30 and fixed it in 10 minutes).

But the New 2DS XL seems to be rather poorly documented, compared to the other devices I worked on.

Is there a list of hardwares that need to be plugged in for it to work? I know about the screens, and I read that the backlight connector needs to be plugged in, but the cameras don't matter. Do you know which other parts are mandatory?
