Just asking
Do some of our staff have early acces to some AAA games to rate it before its launch?
A bit like it is done with some movies
If so, maybe a early acces to a game could be a prize for Raffles?
dont you think?

Yes we get early access to some games. But no, those can't be prizes. They're heavily controlled with embargos and whatnot.

Yes, we do get games early from some publishers. However, we can't just give them away, as they're meant for review purposes only and may have things like embargos and other such restrictions that normal users wouldn't have.

EDIT: Issac 'd

ok... idk what embargos is in htis case, but ok...
When we get games, sometimes they'll have review embargoes on them stating that we are strictly not allowed to release our review, or information about the game, before a specific date. Most of the time, it's usually the day of or occasionally the day before release.

Embargo is basically:
"Here you go, a code for Amazing Game 2: The Return. You can't publish a review before March 17 @ 5 PM though!"

Plus the reporters are probably under a NDA so they would get in legal trouble if they were to break the embargo or give away the keys.

The only way that could happen is if they were given early access keys to give away, sometimes that happens with betas on other sites.

I'm reviving this thread because I just had a new question
Is it possible for you to stream on twitch gameplay of those game?
Or is embargo things includes that too?
Streaming gameplay also has an embargo, though once its passed, we're allowed to freely stream the games on the Twitch account.

people didn't explain embargo very well

embargo means: the reviewer gets early access\a review copy but has to sign\acknowledge that he may only talk about the product or show it, under the developer\publisher rules, usually they have to hold it until the release date or some days prior
meaning that, under an embargo a person can't show, or even just talk about the game or give details about the game, until the company aproves or gives permition
this means any questions you want to ask, the reviewer probably can't answer because he accepted the conditions about not giving details about the product..

Yes, it's a lot like an NDA. There are pretty strict rules that follow. Some embargoes allow you to stream/record gameplay up until a very specific point. Some allow you to write a solid review without discussing certain parts in the games. It's truly tricky business.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
