Something that has always intrigued me about DOOM is that it draws hackers and homebrewers like flies to honey. We're all aware that DOOM is the actual Hello World! in any scene. but now that it's been ran on everything from Texas Instruments calculators to treadmills, there's nowhere left to go for now but up. id's lead engine developer Billy Khan stated back in March in an interview with IGN that the Tech 7 engine (id Soft's latest engine) could theoretically run DOOM Eternal at 1,000 FPS with the right hardware. It's been a rather amusing theory considering 1,000 FPS is just unimaginable, until today.

Polish Community Manager Lukasz Lesniewski contacted hardware retailer x-kom to help him undertake the task of proving the theory true. Along with x-kom's R&D lead Marcin Rywak and Wish CEO Piotr Szulczewski. they managed to pull it off through overclocking and liquid nitrogen cooling. Below you can watch a video of all of this in action.

Specs Used:
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 9700K @ 6.6GHz
  • Motherboard: ASUS Maximus XI APEX
  • GPU: ASUS RTX2080Ti Strix @ 2.4GHz
  • RAM: HyperX Predator 4000MHz CL19 2x8GB
  • Drive: Samsung 512GB M.2 NVMe Evo Plus
  • Power: Be Quiet 1200W Straight Power

Badass, but if you look at the 'gameplay' when it says 999fps, it seems like they are staring at a wall. The screen looks totally black. Obvious @ 2:48. Around 2:35 you can see he found the wall that has the highest frames lol. They didn't actually show them fighting @1000fps.

Still cool though. Liquid nitrogen cooling is wild.

It's almost like the theory of relativity is taking place here. Y'know, the part that states that the closer you get to the speed of light the slower everything else in space-time gets. and everything just becomes a blur.

Not really, Denuvo basically only affects loading times. I've tested this by cracking my steam games that have it. No performance difference and just a small boost to load ups.
Denuvo absolutely can affect performance in games, it just depends on the game and how heavily Denuvo is implemented (which is different between every single game). RIME is the go-to example of absolute proof that Denuvo 100% can/will fuck with performance, though it's more as a "worst case" example because in that case Denuvo was simply implemented poorly (was pushing 20+ triggers basically every single second the game was running, which was absolutely not the intended way of using it and utterly killed performance).

Denuvo affects performance because it implements certain triggers randomly throughout the game, in both loading screens and gameplay, which are obfuscated and virtualized (as Denuvo is based on VMProtect3, mostly), and thus has to be un-obfuscated and translated from whatever virtualization instruction set it uses -> x86. This will decrease performance of whatever game you're playing as your CPU has to spend the processing power and additional instructions to decrypt the obfuscated instructions/process the VM translations, even if you have some monster CPU like a 3950x.

How many triggers are implemented and where they're implemented will change how much of a decrease in performance there is, but basically every Denuvo game will see some kind of performance improvements during gameplay (whether it's major like RIME or more minor like Doom Eternal, where you will get around 5-7% worth of FPS gain when Denuvo is removed), and there are plenty of videos going across plenty of different Denuvo games cracked/uncracked that show exactly that.

Isn't 1000 FPS well beyond the capability of any conventional computer monitor?
Sure, but it's not like you can't render a game above a monitors refresh rate (though you'll get screen tearing if you do).

But the point of doing this was simply because the devs claimed it was possible and someone wanted to test it, not so much because it's some kind of feasible method of playing the game.
