Gaming DS version of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story won't start on 3DS

Hi,

my nephew bought the DS version of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and he wanted to play it on his 3DS.
The game appears in the home screen, but when he tries to start the game it won't start and the 3DS freezes on a Blackscreen.
He tried with two different 3DS with nearly same results.

Old 3DS with Luma CFW on 11.9.0-42E - Blackscreen with chrash back to home menu
3DS XL with official FW 11.9.0-42E - Blackscreen with complete crash/restart of the 3DS XL

What could be the problem and/or is there maybe a solution to make the game work on 3DS.

Does other ds games work on the 3ds being used?

Could just be a faulty cart or ds mode could be bricked on the 3ds.

unfortunately he has no other ds games to try with.
if the ds mode is bricked, is there any way to unbrick/repair it?

i googled it and found this guide about bricked ds mode and how to repair it on https://3ds.hacks.guide/troubleshooting
i followed the guide on old 3ds and the game starts now.
when i have more time, i will try on 3ds xl.
