Dustin Diamond aka Screech of Saved by the bell dead at 44

Lung cancer, I heard he had it like a month ago he didn't last long after.

Dustin Diamond -- best known for playing the lovable Samuel "Screech" Powers on the hit NBC sitcom, "Saved by the Bell" -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

A rep for Dustin tells us he died Monday morning. His condition had greatly declined since last week, and he was taken off of breathing machines in an attempt to get him to hospice care. His GF was by his side when he passed away, and we're told he did not suffer.

Very sad. Screech was the best character in Saved by the bell.

When I was a kid there was no bigger show than Saved by the bell. I really can't even think of a show that came after from my perspective that rivaled the popularity. Everybody watched it.

Totally agree. Never saw the reboots although I saw he reprised his role in later ones. Very funny actor, should've went onto bigger things imo.

I remember watching Saved By the Bell before it was even called that. It originally launched as a show called Good Morning, Miss Bliss. It wasn't very successful so they changed the show by moving all the characters to a different school and they got rid of the character Miss Bliss.

Screech was always the best character. Such a shame that in later life Dustin fell out with all the other actors in the show.

RIP Dustin Diamond and thank you for making my childhood that little bit better.
