DYKG's "Heroes of Hyrule" video about a cancelled DS Zelda taken down by DMCA from Nintendo.

Did You Know Gaming (DYKG) has been a prominent journalism YouTube channel when it comes to everything gaming, focusing on a wide variety of gaming topics, like unannounced projects, rumours, beta content, cancelled projects, exclusive interviews with developers, unreleased artwork, and much more.

Back in October 2nd, 2022, Did You Know Gaming released a new video about a previously cancelled and unannounced DS game focused on the Zelda franchise, titled "Heroes of Hyrule". The premise of the cancelled game was that of a spin-off in the Zelda series, with a tactical RPG emphasis for its gameplay. The story would focus on a variety of characters and races from the Zelda franchise while they work their way towards a common goal. The game itself was going to be helmed by none other than the team behind Metroid Prime, Retro Studios. However, the project ended up getting cancelled in the design stage.

On December 8th, 2022, DYKG reached out through Twitter with an email received from YouTube regarding a strike on their channel sent directly by Nintendo of America, claiming it on DMCA grounds as copyright infringement.

DYKG mentions in their tweet that they will be "exploring all available options to restore the video" on YouTube.

Nintendo of America Inc. Oh...

What, exactly, are they hoping to accomplish here? There is no immediate threat against any of their IPs. No stolen or copyrighted code involved. Just available information being shared and whatever footage and photos they could find. I don't know what the deal is with companies hating the consumers and fans lately, but this is fucked up.

I'm conflicted on this one. On the one hand, it's just information on a game that was never meant to be, where is the harm in allowing fans to know that information? On the other hand, it was never meant to be known to us to begin with, if Nintendo doesn't want people to know about any of their rejected games for whatever reason, I feel like they should be able to reserve that right, despite how much I would love to learn about all of them.

Jeez, Nintendo's getting worse with these DMCA takedowns. The irony in all this is that when Nintendo first started in the gaming business, THEY used to steal ideas from other games! So... Do what I say, not what I do. As long as you don't make a Mario clone or talk about a Nintendo IP they don't want you to know about, you're fine. They, however, can do whatever the heck they want to.

EDIT: I found it on the good ol' Internet Archive; I don't know how long it will last considering Nintendo is not even wanting this out there, but I suggest that people save a copy if they want it. Nintendo can't come after EVERY SINGLE PERSON who views or even copies it since that would overload their legal department. I would leave a link, but... I'd better not.

Downloaded the video for safe keeping and offline viewing later. But I did notice it contained Kakariko village's music theme from OoT, maybe that's what caused the takedown.
