Epic Games now has a worth of $5-8 billion dollars thanks to Fortnite

Love it or hate it, Fortnite has become a major success, cementing itself as a phenomenon and taking the public by storm. Epic Games had already been a major force in the industry, but now they sit among the top. Since the launch of the title, it's earned about 1.7 billion dollars for the company, and is set to hit over the 2 billion mark by the end of the year. These landmark achievements have earned Epic a place on Bloomberg's newly updated billionaire's index, ranking Epic Games at being worth around 5 to 8 billion US dollars. This is quite the significant difference from 2012, where they were valued at around $825 million max.

Fortnite, as a free to play game, means it earns money purely through microtransactions, which range from dances, emotes, or skins. However, the lasting popularity of the game can easily be questioned in the years to come.

I'm glad they are doing well. Epic has always sort of been like an alternative to the giant id for FPS games on PC, and the Unreal engine has always been pretty awesome. The problem is, with this game making so much money, it's going to be their sole focus. I'd love another Unreal Tournament, but UT3 and that weird open-source one were both flops, so it'll never happen anyway I guess.

They don't sell anything that affects game play only cosmetic stuff.
The conspiracy theorist in me likes to think maybe the microtransactions do secretly boost some stats. Mostly due to the wildly random accuracy and damage and because I have NEVER seen someone with the default skin dominate the match.

With all that money, they should be able to finance unreal engine 5, make sure it more developer friendly. (not to be mean but some devs who use them just can't seem to do it justice) :ninja:

Nah. Competitive players often plays with default skins and destroy everyone in the match. Skins gives you 0 advantage. The only, problem of sorts, is that skins with big heads are too notorious, but the head shot hit box is exactly the same as a default skin.
Wow... all on the basis of microtransactions. This destructive market practice really is the future. Gaming is screwed.
What epic has done here is fine. Nothing gives you advantage and no one is forcing you to buy stuff that dont help you at getting better.
dath 0 kills wins tho

I know, that's why it's a conspiracy theory lol. Imagine if it were true though. I mean, not like it's illegal or anything.

My only gripe with cosmetic microtransactions, and it isn't due to Fortnite just when developers figured out people would pay for it, is that in offline AND online games you used to have to do tasks and accomplish certain things to unlock costumes and cosmetics. Sometimes it is something that might have been hard to do. Things like Challenge Mode armor in World of Warcraft is a good example. You don't see this type of content nearly as often.
