Ever heard of a PS3 that won't read movies but will read games?

My slim PS3 (CECH-2101B) is acting this way. I can load PS3 games but if I load a Blu-Ray movie it does some stuff but the disc never shows up on the XMB.

EDIT: So I did some more poking around and came across this. Lifting the PS3 the way it's described in this post does actually get it to see the disc in the drive. According to the post the problem comes down to the PS3's ability to read dual-layer Blu-Rays so I'm going to test it with a couple DL PS3 BDs.

EDIT 2: It does indeed seem to be DL BDs as some of my PS3 games act exactly the same way (won't show up on the XMB until the console is lifted vertically).

After lots of use the PS3 disk drive eventually wears out, like all things. In my experience there are two different kinds of PS3 disks:
Thin Disks, (think older PS3 games and DVDs)
And Thick Disks, (think newer PS3 games and Blu-Ray movies)
After a while my PS3 had the same problems you have experienced, Gran Turismo 6 would not longer show up on my XMB, due to it being a newer, and thicker disk. You can put the PS3 in a vertical position, and your problem should be solved. If it doesn't work after that, PS3 Slims are very inexpensive, only $30 to $70 depending on the condition. As long as your PS3 still boots you can do a system transfer to the other PS3 and continue playing.

I ordered a laser, it'll be here tomorrow.

I just had a headache of a time trying to replace a PS3 phat's laser today (it was SUPPOSED to just be a drive swap but the drive I got was defective, I had to pull the laser from it and install it on my original drive).

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
