Rune Factory and Harvest moon (I would consider the GBA series first though). Those games are built around the concept of doing what you want to do when you want to do it.

Yeah, there actually is some of that to an extent, and the open environments were perhaps one of the most impressive things to me about that game (that and the gorgeous character models).

Transformers may have been free roaming, but you were only free to roam a very small and very uninteresting expanse. To me, the Tony Hawk games are more enjoyable in that respect. It's perhaps a smaller area you can traverse, but the city is a lot more interesting on the DS. Also, believe it or not, the Jackass game allowed for a little bit of free roaming within a small area. But that game was pretty damn stupid, as you'd expect.

My guess is, this thread was inspired by the announcement of Chinatown Wars, as were a ton of other threads. Just wait for GTA DS. Supposedly, it's due out later this year. Either wait for it, or go play the first Tony Hawk game again. That game is probably about as good as it gets right now. Transformers was just okay, but it gets old quick.

Free-roaming?

TWEWY
Super Mario 64 DS
Pokemons, all of them are free-roaming
Digimon Worlds, all of them, the last two will exclude card-style playing

TWEWY is really only free roaming after you've beaten the game once.

Are you guys unable to type out "The World Ends With You", it only takes you 2 seconds and everyone will know what you are talking about.

Most people know what TWEWY is anyway. And a lot of people like to reduce key strokes (especially people not on a full keyboard, like the WiBrain I'm on right now).

Tony Hawk's American Sk8land.

Seriously, it's a free-roaming city GTA-ish style, where you do tricks and take missions (which are also to do tricks). Feels like they based it off of GTA, only with skateboards instead of guns.

Tony Hawk Proving Grounds is pretty cool slightly-free roaming too.
also tingle's rosy rupeeland. barring required pond-donations to unlock new areas.
