GCN GameCube Console Shell Laser Scan or 3D Model Request.

Howdy everyone, it's been a long time since I've logged into GBATemp but I can see that the GameCube section is still active and am looking for some help. I have a Nintendo GameCube in my possession with a really beat up case. The purple case(which I don't like to begin with IMO) is really faded too, I have no idea what the original owner put it through but I got it for super cheap.

I've tried looking for those old xecuter shell replacements with the full size DVD trays that they used to make, just so I could replace it with something, but those are near impossible to come by nowadays. They're kinda ugly by today's standards too. Seeing as custom shells for handhelds like Nintendo GameBoys are so common nowadays I'm surprised people haven't been selling them.

I do not have the equipment to scan the original console shells to create a 3D model out of them but I was hoping someone here would have the equipment or already have scans/models of the shells available to share.

If anyone could help me out by providing the files it would be appreciated. I'm not looking to sell prints of them, I just want to make some for myself with some small adjustments for things like an HDMI plug where the Digital Out port is and have it printed for myself.

I assume you checked the various 3d parts libraries out there. Be wary when checking them as well for some are more art project than shell replacement/engineering drawing and CAD model.

Yeah replacement shells have not really happened since the DVD size ones back when, and I am not sure there were even a bunch of ghost shift/technically failed testing stuff like we saw for the DS (certainly none floated around the usual sites that stocked DS ones and mod chips for the GC). Couple this with the desirability of the DVD shell, the general robustness of the GC and most people wanting GC stuff probably buying a Wii and yeah no supply.

3d printing might also be a bit expensive -- the gamecube, or sub assemblies thereof, is right on the limit of a lot of 3d printer print sizes which means a bump up to the big boy toys.

Video for those curious about what remaking might entail (all those features at the bottom of the lid section... most are just stiffening but there are a few that warrant some measure of accuracy).


Anyway my scanner went years ago and I am up for making another (though I do have a nice webcam and laser level...) so that would mean hours with the vernier callipers and micrometer (even a 3d scan would probably warrant that as well, though you would have a better starting point). Been tempted to put together a library in the past of the various devices I own along with ports for things but eh.

How bad is the shell? The sort of thing a solvent wipe and some sandpaper can't fix? Plastic dyes for mere mortals have also come a long way, and custom vinyls is also an option.

Thanks for the input. The some vent fins on the back of the GameCube are cleanly broken off, there a huge scuff on the top side of it(kinda like the corners were dragged across concrete), and the lid is broken off. I needs a replacement case. I'm surprised it was in working condition, lmao.

I'm willing to pay the price for a 3D printing service to do it though. Cost isn't much of a factor.
