It was probably to extinguish a flame war. They'll probably unlock it when folks have cooled down.

Yeah, no new info was coming out, and it became a "scam! / Not a scam!" thread, so I'm not surprised it got locked.

Well that is true.

However it would have been nice a little warning first instead of locking it out of nowhere

As suspected, it was locked due to a combination of no news/excessive bickering. If there is ever anything new to discuss on the subject it might be opened again.
