How exactly do I go about doing this? I have a 8 gb file ready, but Configurable USB Loader won't load it because of the 4 gb file limit of the FAT HDD. I read something about splitting into smaller wbfs-files, but I'm lost in the woods as how too.

Any pointers (a guide or which programs to use) would be most welcome!

why not just away with the fat and use wbfs ? its so much easier

Don't think so. It is better to use FAT32 to multipurpose partition, and Wii Backup Manager is very simple to use.
