can linux do a raw read of the discs with DD?
The problem is that the layout of the data is actually different, you would need a drive with custom firmware to even get proper binary off the disk. Even if you did, you would need the Wii U common key to decrypt the contents.

I may have it wrong but in theory regarding "ripping via Wiimode"... the Wii U discs would be read by a BR-style laser, and the Wii DVDs would actually need a second laser to read them (as with the PS3). So if Nintendo chose to do so, the BR-type laser capable of reading Wii U discs could simply be disabled in Wiimode entirely as it wouldn't be needed.

Has anybody tried to connect the Wii U-Drive to a PC? Has anyone more information about the connectors? IDE? SATA? SCSI? Maybe this way data gets readable?

The Wii U drive is meant for a different architecture, you would need a custom firmware for the drive to get it to work on the PC and even then...

There's pictures of someone taking their WiiU apart (DeadlyFoez?) and it actually only had one lazer ... interestingly enough.

But the best bet would be with CleanRip from vWii ... but that only works for those few people who have actually been able to install the HBC on their WiiU.

Many of the older BR drives did have 2 lenses, one for each laser. Now many drives are created so the 2 lasers share the same lense.

Some of the PS3's have a single lense, others have 2 lenses. I was surprised to see the PS3 Super Slim have 2 lenses.

I know WiiXplorer can browse a Wii or GC disc on a normal Wii. You could use that to see if it has access to the DRIVE from Wii homebrew with a Wii disk. I'd assume the disks themselves would use a different encryption scheme, though, so actually browsing the content might not work but if you MIGHT be able to get enough access to rip an image.

The Wii U drive is actually using SATA and can be connected to a PC rather simply the only problem is that it doesn't use normal SCSI read commands but a custom set which require the drive's unique key.

Has anyone (other than these ODE groups) tried to dump the drives firmware?

Also curious of who makes drive and if it is somehow just a modification of an existing BR drive in the wild.

Also if U are correct (and I asume you are) then we are gonna need those keys to use ODE and gonna have to get them from dumping the drive or thru a wiiU kernel hack?
