Homebrew demo Retro League GX "demakes" Rocket League for the Nintendo GameCube

While you've been able to play Rocket League for the Nintendo Switch for a while now, a new homebrew is going to let you get a similar experience...on the Nintendo GameCube. A developer has released their demo for Retro League GX, a homebrew game that aims to "demake" Rocket League, but on the retro GameCube. It takes the core concepts from Rocket League, such as boost, car and soccer ball physics, and goals, all in early 2000's graphical glory. Currently, the demo lets you fight against AI teams, but the developer intends to implement LAN multiplayer, with future plans for ports to other platforms, such as the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo Wii, and the PlayStation Portable, with the source code to be released sometime in 2022. Retro League GX is playable via original hardware or Dolphin.

3DS does (or at least I know it did on DS, see Metroid Prime Hunters. Idk if any 3DS games do), Wii, see Animal Crossing City Folk/LgttC. Idk about PSP
From what I remember of the DS games that kind of supported it, they were 2 player versus titles only, not large team games like a Rocket League clone.
Voice chat requires a very specific infrastructure to work correctly, especially for anything more than basic p2p. Without massive compression on the audio streams the chat would lag out the gameplay as it's far more bandwidth intensive than data.

Very impressive already for only being a demo version!
It's clearly very early as shown by the graphics and sound, but to see the whole physics appear in a very functional state already is what amazes me.

Give it some more time and that could become a really solid Rocket League homebrew port!
Seeing many more platforms are also planned for it makes it even more exciting.

This is really cool. I hear a lot of complaints about the graphics but those little slug cars and the overall athletic of the environment really look at home on the GameCube.

I'm curious to see this run on 3ds hopefully with 3D compatibility (yeah I'm one of those nerds that plays games with the 3D slider on max)

No need to wait, Dolphin already supports 3D!

This is great. Major thanks to the developer.

I've never played rocket league and I know this is still an early build but after watching the video, a few things that could go a long way:

  • Dynamic shadows
  • Some variation in vehicles
  • Some different ball types with different weights (and/or maybe a multiball mode!)

remember the DS homebrew WifiChat? I remember speaking to a kid who said he was from Denmark. Pretty surreal moment I had there

Looks like it's either in early alpha stages, or they just really suck at art. Either way, I hope it improves visually, because they nailed the crappy floaty physics perfectly.

Well. I'm going to try it on original hardware. I also have to try the Splatoon demake, so I will take out my old Wii. It looks interesting

this guy should get more modelers & artists to work on this, as it stands it looks like an early PS1 game more than anything.
early 00s games did not look this basic

Yeah, I've played with Dolphin's 3D ability, I've also played Rocket League in 3D using TriDef, but I'm after that "glasses free" experience. Give me a reason to whip out the 3DS again, ya know. I miss that magic of putting in a new 3DS game, slowly moving the slider up, and marveling at the little handheld that could.

Jeez, now I'm getting all sentimental :rofl2: a lot of good times with the DS family. Definitely one of the greats.

Probably alot of public domain/royalty free/free use models out there that can be used too. Rocket League filled with pickup trucks would be hilarious.
