How to do a SVN/GIT checkout?

hey guys
i am so confused because i cant get to do a checkout with a svn/git in the form of
svn://
or
git://

my questions is how to do a svn/git checkout with svn:// and git:// and the starting?
for example
svn://svn.gbatemp.net/ askgbatemp/trunk

(i made up the example and there is a space between the / and askgbatemp because there is a limit for a word lenght)

I'm not too familiar with code checkouts, but I've never seen svn:// or git://. For the project I do check out (nesDS) I use TortoiseSVN.

yea i have tortoise svn
i use it to download any repository that i want
but those are in http:// mode
for example http://svn.gbatemp.net/svn/trunk

i still cant figure out how to use svn:// or git://

btw offtopic: what is the nesDS svn link?

Doing a checkout with svn:// or git:// is exactly the same as http://. The only difference is the protocol used, but that should not be a concern to you.

Just use the url that's given to you to checkout the project and don't worry if it's svn:// or http://

In the case of git:// you need to use tortoisegit.

Also, do you have an example of a svn:// url that doesn't work?

here is an example
svn://svn. acekard.com (<-had to put a space due to length of word)
user = acekard
pass = acekard

(this is the only example i could remember on the top of my head)

I get a timeout, I guess the server is simply down / offline.

Try with the one attached, it should work. If it does, then don't worry everything's fine on your side.

GIT is somewhat different, you don't do checkouts but rather you clone, and instead of updating you pull.

so like:
git clone git://test.com/hi.git
git pull


Oh, and I can confirm that svn:// or git:// prefixes work, acidrain pretty much nail'd it.

yea it did work
most likely it was the source that shutdown the svn
its pretty weird that all svn:// i tried to get were offline

@antoligy where do you input 'git clone' 'git pull' commands?

Those commands are for a command prompt.

If you prefer a gui, there's tortoisegit.
You also need msysgit (http://code.google .com/p/msysgit/)

If you prefer the command prompt, you only need msysgit.
