How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .

(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Fix Blackscreen with VC in emuNAND
Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

Anyway to go on topic with the formatting of the hdd to wbfs, I dont think I ever did that cause I could play the wii games and the wiiware off the hdd and store other general stuff I needed to as well.

No. To clarify again to anyone who wanna/gonna use this Wii-softmod guide. During step 4. "Install USB Loader GX and Custom IOS". Only install USB Loader GX and Custom IOS and ignore WBFS Manager. As Step 5. "Play Newer Wii Games and Gamecube games" - spoilers window - displays extactly how to fORMAT your HDD to FAT32 and Add/play Wiigames, Wiiware and Gamecube games from your External HDD.

I thought that people who did step 4 and used WBFS Manager would understand that they have to format their HDD again or convert their wbfs drive to fat32 ( conversation method to make wbfs hdd to fat32 is here : http://gbatemp.net/threads/wbfs2fat-wii-entry-pc-software.294498/ )

Edit: Myself I used the conversation method as i had +300 wii games in wbfs format . Time to convert my HDD was as little as 3-4 minutes. Then i had a perfectly FAT32 HDD with all games intact and playable. After that I sorta.. deleted all games anyway, my HDD now consists of all game-combatible systems (wiiware, virtual console, gamecube, wiigames), but i use the HDD more for PS3 games atm. Better graphics and such..

Good Luck! :)

Everybodys methods different. When I first started I used to think you needed to use wbfs manager to transfer the games over, but I guess if you already
have them in appropriate format (wbfs) I'm assuming you could just drag straight to the wbfs folder on your hdd and they should work, or at least they work
for me that way. I think I've also dragged isos that way and they worked as well, although I cant confirm this off the top of my head. I used usb config and still do,
but per the guide I thought I'd also add wiiflow and the usb loader gx. Should be fun to mess around with when I get a chance.

Hey.

Do you have any idea if the Wii DVD Reader needs to be functional for you to play off an HDD? I ask this because the last guide I followed was great, but it needed a random DVD in the Nintendo Wii, though it could've been anything. My Wii stopped reading DVDs a couple years ago, as a result, I couldn't play any Gamecube games. Do you know if this tutorial is the same case?

Great guide by the way and thanks in advance.

No. You don't need to use any DVD readers. Only your SD slot. AND gamecube controller/memory card if you gonna play gamecube games.

This is the real beauty with softmodding or using homebrew browser. If your DVD has stopped working. You can ask your friends to *put* their games on an USB drive. And you can thereafter play the games. If you already own the games your friend *put* on your HDD . I think its fare share.

Hm, I guess I must've messed up somewhere then, all I'm getting is a black screen when I try to boot a Gamecube game.

I already had Homebrew Channel installed, so I just followed the guide in Part 4's description. I then installed the 'IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad', changed the IOS to 249, and installed 'DIOSMIOS_2.10.wad'. I used DMToolbox.exe to convert a Gamecube .ISO and put it in my HDD in /games/. My HDD is FAT32, Active, Primary, and has a 32KB Allocation Size. As for my SD Card, I only use it for applications, but I'm pretty sure it's FAT32 with default Allocation Size.

Any ideas?

hi,

yupp. but i recommend looking into change the fat32 partition to primary, n first. instructions in part 5 spoilers window.
Too Add: I myself use USB-drive with ntfs and fat32 partition and can play Wii/gamecube games without problems. So should work for you too :). Just.. make fat32 parition -> USB1 (primary) i think its most important.

Also... A warning!! don't mess around to much with euseUS Partition Manager. Like, changing, ntfs to fat32, or convert primary to logical, or like that, It takes like DAYS to change an ntfs partition into fat32 if you have some files there. --- My USB drives works fine atm. But i had to like, format them 2 times because -- that program just don't have enough warning messages... :x
Anyway, have your FAT32 type Primary
and your NTFS type logical. That works for me :)
(Also the 'status' (inside easeUS P Master) on both partitions should be None. )

file requires from site means the file on the youtube video link. i will change the info, its kinda unclear,
file requires means you need doownload youtube uploaders files n put into your sd card, i know, but i used at two times part 4 and part 5 files without any problems. so they should be safe.

I also tried for a second time the wad file in part 5 , ios249[56]d2x9b47.wad . confirmed it plays with gamecube, wii and emunand games without any problem.

Ok. Let's go from starters. What USB Loader are you using?
If you use USB Loader GX , open that app, goto Global Options - Credits. and say what revXXX shows up.
- This is my 'credits' view . http://oi60.tinypic.com/2ntd5sg.jpg

The left-upper side displays im using DIOSMIOS 2.10
The right-upper side display 'rev1218' (thats my USB Loader GX version) - you can get it from DMLizard ( http://www.wii-homebrew.com/download/nintendo-wii-downloads/pc-tools/dmlizard/ ) i don't know if the link is illegal or not. i remove it if anyone comments that.
The right-upper side under rev1218 displays cios version (d2x v9beta...blahblah)

Update USB Loader GX to r1218
*Required to play Gamecube games.
A. Plug SD-card into Computer
B. Open DMLizard type 2 and 2 then s to download USB Loader GX r1218 . Once downloaded type 0 then 0 to Exit DMLizard . Copy dmlizard\copy-to-sd\apps\usbloader_gx\ to SD:\apps\usbloader_gx\ - overwrite current files
C. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii
D. Done! :)

.
I would plug that USB-drive into a Computer and open any partition managers (like easeUS Partition Master)
Then look if the FAT32 partition is 'Primary' and Status 'None'. Also if the NTFS partition is Logical.

After that I look into part 6 'emuNAND' in this guide . I personally loves USB Loader's emuNAND method as you only 'enables' it when you actually want to play a game, and not have to emunand your whole Wii NAND.

Good luck! :)

*Apperently im not as updated about this matter...

"you can use ntfs partition to add/play wii and gamecube games.. "

from - http://gbatemp.net/threads/help-with-ntfs-and-usbloader-gx.206244/

Here is how I did it:

First, make sure you're running the latest USB Loader GX and have cIOS 222 and 223 installed.
Second, go here to download the Wii Game Manager: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=199151

Third, extract the .rar file somewhere and run Simple. Open the folder where you have any and all ISOs. Right-click on the game you want to convert and select "Create .wbfs" -> "No split" and save it somewhere. If you want to before hand, go to your external USB HDD and create a folder called "wbfs". Then you can just save the .wbfs file in that folder.

Once you have your games loaded on your HDD, plug it into your Wii (the port closest to the edge of the Wii), turn the system on, and run USB Loader GX.

Give the program to load up as it will look for the wbfs folder. Now, should the games still not show up, go to Settings and click Game Load. There is an option for FAT to look for the games in directories. it will show "None" but just click it once and you're set. Don't worry if it says FAT, it works for NTFS as well.

You should be good to go.

is modmii outta flavour ?
Nope. Sure ModMii is very flavourable and useable !

Here's a video showing how to get modmii then use its custom guide (HTTP) to install homebrew, install ios236 installer,
and wads required to play games, use priiloader and backup nand and get usb loader to play Wii games on.

It basicly replaces my guide from step1-step5 exklusive the diosmios part... If people wanna use modmii instead, feel free :)

--->

Here's also a video showing in detail how to get homebrew, install ios236 installer mod5 and wads required to play games..
+ use priiloader, and backup nand - it's just part1 as part2 is about piracy n download games ...

I use NTFS harddrive for my Wii games, and play GC backups from disc... because my Wii is a launch system, and can read burned games. I even gutted a non-working DMG Gameboy, and stuffed the harddrive inside using just a Dremel tool.
