You know, as witty and snark-like that may sound, that's actually a fair point.

@wormdood, i have to agree with @Zeldaplayer67. I've seen too many times people posting roms on titledb. That site was too easy to abuse.
fair enough its just the first time i ever heard of such a thing . . . and it sounds totally possible i just assumed if it was taken down because of piracy there would be some kind of dcma notice in its place or at least a thread wherein the whistle blower was either forewarning or gloating or . . . or like something that should have made gbatemp news

Someone give me an explanation in basic terms. What was this/what happened?

TitleDB was an online homebrew database containing direct links to CIA files of homebrew for the 3DS. FBI supports downloading titles listed on TitleDB directly on the console.

The service was shut down today for unknown reasons. That's the extent of it. :P

On the 3ds using fbi you could connect to titledb website and download pretty much every homebrew that was ever available on the 3ds. Sadly over the last few weeks people started to upload a bunch of pirated games and now the site has been shut down for unknown reasons

(damb I got ninja'd)

The submission process should have been manual.
And yes, that would have meant less people uploading homebrew, but there would probably also have been less crap and warez as well.

If nobody writes a replacement, I might do one here in a few weeks.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
