Media Create Sales Top 20 - Week #1 2018

arrow.png

Every week, sales figures are published by Media Create for the Japanese gaming market. A lot of companies use these stats for an indication of what the next hot title could be in the West.
They are also usually a great talking point, and as it's a new year and week 1's figures have just been published, we've decided to cover them on GBAtemp:

As we can see from these figures, Nintendo have 18 of the top 20 best selling games in the chart and are also dominating weekly hardware sales.
Splatoon 2 is also the first console game to break 2 million copies in Japan in the last 8 years.
Will they keep up this momentum throughout 2018?

Switch game sales should theoretically be even bigger this year than last as the library continues to grow. PS4 should also get a boost I'd think from Monster Hunter World, and I know PC is pretty much negligible in Japan.

I hardly think we can correlate Japan's market to west and don't know why any serious gaming business in thr west would but I hope NSW success motivates Nintendo to take advantage of the momentum it has right now.

If you live in Japan, these figures are no surprise. Switch, 3DS and Vita dominate the shelf spaces. Even the PS4 seems to lag behind the Vita there.

Xbox One gets a token corner of the store, usually next to all the retro-bit clone consoles.

*looks at X-Boner sales*

Splatoon 2 is also the first console game to break 2 million copies in Japan in the last 8 years.
Is that referring to home console sales only? I find it hard to believe that no home or handheld console games have sold over 2 million copies in the last 8 years, considering how popular the 3DS is, especially in Japan, and it had a lot of system sellers released for it.

Also, the console sales table is unreadable on the dark theme, please fix.

I'm surprised at how many members seem so very familiar with Japanese video game sales figures. I definitely found it interesting. Had no idea Nintendo were dominating SO hard over there.

tfw the non-rushed "proud" dark theme still isn't finished
I think most people would be surprised. Store shelves are probably 70% Nintendo, 25% Sony, 5% miscellaneous.

I would suggest changing this code box to HTML, so it's not coloured all over the place.

they need to have a strong line up on the launch titles too. I think they should move metroid prime 4 to the next console because by now it has been quite a while and there's no release date scheduled yet

well as far as metroid prime 4 is concerned, the next system probably is similar enough to the current gen they can probably easily just slap it onto a next gen cart and call it good :P
