During E3 2017, Microsoft took to the stage to announce its yearly showcase of new games and content updates. In their lineup, was the "Super Duper Graphics Pack", for Minecraft, which would give the game a 4K graphical makeover, fit with majorly improved graphics, shaders, and lighting. At the time, it was promised for a 2018 release, for Xbox One X and PC, via the Bedrock version. But, after two years, and hardly any updates, Mojang has finally cancelled the project, citing performance issues as the cause. Considered as an "ambitious initiative", the developers found that running the game with such graphics was too demanding on certain devices. As such, the Super Duper Graphics Pack will not see a release, and Mojang will instead focus on "other ways" for fans to experience Minecraft with a new look.

Optimize it for looking like that on smartphones and switch? Heheh, that ain't work anytime unless switch was upgraded with tensor cores or something. And EVEN then, you gotta account EVERY FREAKING SMARTPHONE.

"a pain to optimize" would be underestimating it.

You do realize games like BoTW exist right? The Tegra SoC in the Switch I would assume is more than enough. Then again, not sure how a C++ rewrite of Minecraft would really handle shaders like this.

Well this already exists for java, and has for years. Dunno about shaders and such for bedrock but there's HD texture packs there too.
Honestly just a complete waste of time and effort, i'm glad they realized that. They should be pouring 100% of their manpower into bedrock's mod API. That's the game changer.

I don't even have a problem playing NES games on a tube tv, but for some reason minecraft attacks my eyes worse than any given Virtual Boy kiosk ever did. The only thing harder for me to really watch is some high level classic doom speedrunning.

I think people don't understand what the project was. The team was trying to reconstruct the entire graphics engine to support the super duper graphics without destroying the cross platform game it has become. It wasn't simply just a shaderpack anyone could install

Apparently they can't do what they were showing either, so mods win out in the end. Not that it makes much difference to me, I had my fill of Minecraft a long, long time ago.

While that's true, you also have to account for it being at 4K resolution, and the most important part; bad optimization.

That's the thing, they should've sacraficed 4k for shaders, it's friggin' Minecraft. 4k pixels that are ankle high won't look any better in 4k while better lighting would go a long way.
