It's really the best of both worlds. I too am growing fond of the bucket idea. Kudos to Fluto.

I can't wait to get this animated :D

I like it. It reminds me of the PSP. The handheld that had one of my favorite homebrew scenes :)

oh boy. isn't that nice and clean.

FYI no final decision has been made on the design yet. I started working on the menu saturday and really like fluto's water idea because it's nice, animated and you can do fun easter eggs and shit with it.
so to be perfectly honest, i really really want to keep the water effect thing. i also really like his logo but i'm definitely open to other possibilities, like what Arkhandar is proposing. now if we could have both the water and the clean logo/interface...
Well, you can have the water fill up the entire screen instead and the squares will animate like bubbles.

I like it! Very clever making the squares into 'bubbles', I never would've thought of that.

Either the gradient or the water surface could possibly use some color tweaking, as the lighter gradient endpoint at the right side lacks contrast against the water surface. That's really the only nit I have to pick right now.

Some rough ideas for animation:
* Along with the obvious wave animation, perhaps have the 'bubbles' rise from below and fade out before they would reach the surface.
* Obvious bubble-like animations, e.g. primary 'waver' and secondary 'wobble'..
* Keep paired 'bubbles' together somehow, though not statically attached, so they still animate separately but stay together as a pair...
edit: on second thought, the more i think about it, the less I like the idea of having them waver/wobble. Too cheesy. Generate them randomly (with some in pairs) and have them move straight up slowly (perhaps at different rates), and fade out as they approach the surface... probably would be the 'cleanest' look.

Edit2: others appear to be interpreting these as a 'shimmer' effect rather than bubbles. That could work too. Just have them generate invisible at random points, fade in slowly to a random opacity level, then fade back out.

I'm not an artist by any means, but I think it would look great if there was an intro graphic that showed snow and blinked into the homebrew graphic. Then it could loop on a Wii-esque HBC graphic.

Also it would be great if there were simulated multi-layered scrolling in different directions of various video game characters (Paper Mario comes to mind).

It looks good for the Nintendo scene as it is along the same line of what is official. Honestly, I prefer darker themes like the GW menu. I hope there will be a way to skin it akin to DS flash carts so end users can decide what it looks like.

Wow. There's a lot of nice design.. I bet it'll be really hard to select a winner now... (or the "best" one)..

Good luck everybody!
