Hi there, I'm sorry if this question has been posted an absurd amount of times, or is in the wrong board.

Put simply, I'm a newbie. I don't have any interest in extensively modding my PS3, to be able to tweak and configure every fine detail. I really just want to play my imported games on the system, and being clueless about this topic, it's a little overwhelming. I'm unsure on where to start.

My console is a fat, 60gb, launch Playstation 3. It's a PAL region system.
Currently on firmware 4.55

Thanks!

Is the "PS2" in the thread's title a typo or do you intend to play imported PS2 games? Because if it isn't, things only get more and more complicated from here on out If you mean PS3 games then you might as well go ahead and put them in the drive because the PS3 isn't region locked, it was up to developers to use lock-outs if they felt like it and I believe there's only *1* game that uses them to date - Persona 4 Arena.

EDIT: Actually, they don't - you have the classic PS3 so they should work perfectly fine. If you have a CECHAxx 60GB model, you have all the necessary PS2 chips on-board already. If you have a CECHCxx model, the missing ones are emulated by software. In both cases, the system supports PS2 games out of the box.

I do mean PS2 games.
If I try to play an NTSC, Playstation 2 title on the PS3, I get an error message that reads; "This software cannot be started due to region restrictions."
Meanwhile, I can play PAL, PS2 discs without any issue.

Right, right - unlike PS3 games, PS2 ones are already region encoded, hence the error message. I would assume that the most basic of all CFW's would do the trick - you just have to be on 3.55 or lower firmware to go through with the modification.

Unfortunately, my system is on 4.55.
Is there any way around that?

You'll have to downgrade the system using a hardware flasher like the E3 Flasher. There's also ODDE's, but this means getting rid of the optical drive altogether and using ISO's instead, so it's counter-productive for what you want to do. I'm no expert on PS3 modding though, so I'll let other more experienced users give you suggestions. ;)

to my knowledge aside from ODDE's (which you don't want) and a hardware flasher there is no way to downgrade your system.

To be honest mate, i would just try and find second hand PS3 online that is already either jail broken or on 3.55. I have 2 one for Homebrew and one original for online. The advancements that they have now with multiman is great. you can simply rip all your PS2 DISKS to a internal or external hard drive and it doesn't even need to have the PS2 chip that you have. From previous PS3 repair history (i used to run a repair center) the model you have is just a ticking time bomb for the YLOD so i wouldn't want to be downgrading anything and just keep as original and a collectors item!

Since the PS4 has come along the PS3's have dropped heaps online (ebay) and get one that is a old Slim not the new rubbish ones... Good luck :)

Or you could go the Swap Magic way. Buy the disc and with that launch Open PS2 Loader. There, you can load your games ISOs from USB. You'd need to make an ISO from your games and use USBUtil to transfer them to an hdd. This way, you don't need to downgrade, and the only costs are Swap Magic and a new hdd if you don't have one (I guess 160 gb is enough for ps2)

^ this would solve your problem and i know that you dont really want to have the full functions of the JB however then you get access to Homebrew?
