NX-Shell - Multipurpose File Manager for Nintendo Switch

Hello everyone, the new release with the much requested USB support is finally here! (Couldn't have done it without @DarkMatterCore's usb library) It's worth mentioning since it is such a big update (backend changes and FS refactor) there *may* be some issues, but the only way I can find and fix those is through you guys! However rest assured, I did run a lot of tests myself to make sure it is functioning as expected. If I waited a month, it would've been exactly 2 years since the last release 🥺.

Change-log:

  • FS:
    • Added support for browsing USB devices.
    • Switched back to libc to handle FS operations.
    • Brought back support for browsing other devices such as safe, user and system.
  • GUI:
    • Update to imGui v1.88.
    • Switch to imGui's new keyEvent API.
    • The two views (File Browser and Settings) can now be navigated as tabs.
    • Switched from list view to a table view using imGui's table API.
    • Sorting is no longer applied from settings, it can be done directly by clicking on the table column headers.
    • A new selector has been added to allow the user to switch to different devices such as safe, user, USB etc.
    • Settings are no longer categorized by imGui's tree system.
    • No longer uses SDL2 as a backend, but instead uses opengl v3 directly (along with egl).
  • Fixes:
    • Properly delete config file if the config file version is outdated.
    • Properly free textures after exiting application.
    • Fixed scrolling via the right joystick after zooming into an image.
    • Lots of code clean up and under the hood changes that are too many to list here.

It wasn't me who made the request I already requested this in a nice way, many pages before this one and never touched this issue again for that reason. Another user requested that and I only replied saying what type of USB support ppl are expecting. Nothing more. Keep up the good work

After you explained it, I now understand what you were trying to say. I think it was the language barrier. You were answering his question, but the context was not clear because you quoted his entire post and the english was a bit awkward. Dev's often get harassed by users who want to push for their features to be implemented, I understand Joels frustration. It was nothing personal to you.

Also I'm not sure what people are expecting really, "USB Support" as in accessing usb storage devices? or USB mass storage (mount SD as a usb)

That said, NX-Shell is awesome, and its the only homebrew I run on my switch besides my own. I cant wait to see future updates during your winter break joel.

Ok so audio is working with the video player and is now merged into master. If someone can test the nightly that would be nice. Please test with something small, I have only tested an mp4 video which is about 30 MB and is 1280x720.
Currently doesn't pause, or exit the video player once it stops playing. You can press "B" to exit, but causes glitches on the right side of the screen sometimes. May cause hangs/crashes, so be aware of that.

I'm no weeb, but Naruto is quite the only anime I watch (updated test video with shitty audio due to camera distance -- might get flagged for copyright):

Tried it with a 24 min h264 animation,worked fine.
Can you clarify what kind of video encoding the player support? Maybe everything ffmpeg supports in theory?

At the moment, only 720p mp4 videos can be played. Anything higher than 720p may cause problems.

Also maybe this one won't get flagged for copyright: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1rXSrgDKvAjFfBaaqHCcdkBt11SSGMcgS (PS. It's a trailer, it is not netflix on your switch)
The sound and the quality of the video looks off, but looks and sounds a lot better in person.

Heres some more tests, I put pastebin links in the video descriptions with media info so you can see details about each file. When testing this time There were two which wouldn't open these were both larger than 1GB here is the media info for those https://pastebin.com/QuaJwwTU. I also noticed that if you close a video then open another one sometimes they dont play at or just play audio. This was fixed by going to the home page and then opening nx shell again.

First one is upside down sorry

Did a bit more testing if device goes into sleep mode while video is playing it becomes unresponsive. The 4th video started having audio and visual stuttering after a few minutes of playback, Same with The 3rd video which is also 1080p will test some more 720p video. Let the first video play for a while and the audio started desyncing probably around 5-10 minutes in. Audio desync on second video too after playing for around 10-15 minutes. It had no points where it skipped or anything so maybe the audio is playing a bit too fast or video a small bit to slow, that video just finished when palyback ended the system crashed lel. Sorry cant test mp4 as I dont have any

I must be doing something wrong...

Trying to copy System/Contents/registered to SD so i could use ChoiDuJourNX to install a new system menu but it won't let me copy anything from that folder.

Using Original FW 6.1.0 and CFW 2. 3 beta.

TIA

The debug.log shows this:

fsFsOpenFile(/New/.., FS_OPEN_READ, 1821297592) failed: 0x202
fsFsOpenFile(/New, FS_OPEN_READ, 1821297592) failed: 0x202

Repeated over an over.

But only when I use a microSD formated with exFAT. When I use a Fat32 one it produces no debug.log.

Hi Joel16, I really appreciate the work that you've done! Thank you so much! I have one question, would a video scrubber and a play/pause button be added in the near future? Thanks.

With all these video player homebrews coming around, I'm probably going to just remove the feature. No reason to waste my time.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
