Hey guys,
A friend is a big rpg fan and she's torn between two games Octopath and XC2.
As I don't have any experience with these two games I cannot really recommend her.
Those of you who played both games, which one do you prefer?

I prefer Xeno 2 (~200 hours into Xeno 2, about 6 so far in octopath though), but these games are quite different. One is a very old school turn-based JRPG (think like SNES Final Fantasy games) with random encounters and a sort of hybrid 2d/3d style with pixel graphics, and the other is a much more modern style JRPG with real time combat, large open world etc.

Personally, Octopath has a far better battle system. Xenoblade has a good story but pisspoor fighting mechanics.

Octopath has both though. So it's really does she want a pretty looking 3d world? Or a nice 2d pixel art one.

Strongly disagree, octopath feels very similar to bravely default, which isn't bad but does get rather repetitive IMO. Xenoblade starts off slow (really slow) but it keeps on adding on mechanics to quicken it, even near the end of the game new mechanics are still being introduced and by the end of the game it can get pretty fast paced and hectic. just my thoughts though

They're both incredible games, so tough decision!

Here's the down and dirty:
Octopath has a stellar battle system and a pretty good story.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a pretty good battle system and a stellar story.

So what do you want? A better story or better gameplay? I don't think you'll be disappointed with either game, provided you're a fan of JRPGs and traditional turn-based combat.

Get an SXOS pro or some other way to play backups and an SD card, then find both on the intarwebz.

I have XB2 on cart, but I bought it months ago, well before backup loading was possible. I found an xci of it, but ran out of room to put it on my SD card. Heard Ocotopath has a shortage out there, so feel no guilt just downloading that one, not that I usually feel guilt about violating stupid copyright laws. Havent actually played either (yet), other than to see if they work.

this!

even after 150h i still found new combos, more efficient rotations, weaknesses, etc.
xeno is very complex and i applaud it for not dumping the entire mechanics at once, because that would be very overwhelming for the average player.

Do you want retro feeling, 16 bit type JRPG with easy to understand mechanics? Octopath.
Do you want a huge-ass grindfest with common enemy fights that take minutes, a battle system that doesn't even make sense after 50 hours and over-complicated menus? Xenoblade.
