Haven't played them much, at least, I don't think I have. Pretty vague genre. Unfortunately, the only one I can think of and know is a DRPG, is Etrian Odyssey 5. It was pretty fun, but I didn't get far because I didn't want to start at the end of the series. Just been hoping for a collection for the Switch.

Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land on PS2?

I like the game in general, especially Virgo and her/his menacing Kobolds.

I like the shin megami games so would have to say Persona Q for 3DS. Kinda like drawing the maps like using grid paper for those old school D&D games

I'll gladly enter!

My favorite DRPG is Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light for ... (don't throw any stones at me please) mobile phones.
Unfortunately this never saw a release in Europe but I somehow found an APK that worked for a while until it was shut down and had so much fun with it.
The music and the monsters, all reminded me of the Game Boy Color game of Dragon Quest Monsters.
I wish they'd continue it.

I guess I haven't played a lot of DRPGs exactly but I think Swords and Serpents on the NES is one. It was an rpg but was different from others I knew of, being a little kid. I got to play it with my brother and it was just kinda cool looking. I'm sure if I played it now it wouldn't be so great but we had a lot of fun with it back then.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The sale of Labyrinth of Refrain plus the release of Etrian Odyssey Nexus has got me thinking of my personal history with DRPGs, and how they tend to get very little love from the gaming press (they either get ignored or don't tend to review well in the aggregate).

So here's what I'd like to discuss: What's your favorite new/current DRPG and why? And historically, what's your favorite DRPG and why? Personal background, stories and anecdotes are encouraged!

I'm hoping we get a nice little discussion going and this oft-ignored genre gets some love.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Both my classic favorite and modern favorite are on the Switch.

Shining in the Darkness is my favorite classic DRPG. I played a lot of these types of RPGs on the PC as a kid, but never made it past the first level of any dungeon (or in the case of some Might & Magic games never even found the dungeon entrance). But the first one I managed to almost beat was Shining in the Darkness. I was only 10 or 11 and had no idea how to play the game. My neighbor and I spent a few dozen hours one summer trying to get past the first little crab boss. It never occurred to us to graph paper, so I memorized each dungeon level. The art and music was what drew me in and it was the first game I played where I learn the value of grinding.

I think Labyrinth of Refrain is my favorite modern DRPG. I haven't played enough of Nexus to say definitively, but LoR has a good story and production value. I LOVE the Etrian Odyssey series, but just for the gameplay. I tend to get really bored with the dialog and whatever little story there is. Most (all) DRPGs that I've played have had very bare bones story and dialog. So LoR has been a breath of fresh air on that front. Some of the attempts of humor fall flat, but the overall story, writing and voice acting is pretty top-notch.

Personally the new Shadowgate on PC was a phenomenal throwback to the original for NES and is one of my faves (though I'm not 100% sure I would classify it as a DRPG even though you have the roleplaying elements and the dungeon). Though Shadowgate 64 was hella amazing too!

Shadowgate PC 2014

Shadowgate 64

Shadowgate NES

All of these games also had a killer soundtrack that added to the atmosphere of the games respectively.

The DRPG that I really loved is ZANKI ZERO: LAST BEGINNING, and it's probably the first game I really enjoyed of this genre and made me play others which, sadly, in my opinion, were not at the level, or at least that's what they seemed to me.

---

not entering the giveway either.
Good luck to the winner!
if it's an official publisher/developer choice, that's very kind of them!

I didn't play a lot of first person DRPG.
I remember Eyes of the beholder on Amiga! it's one of the first I played
I LOVED Shadowgate on NES too.
Both have their own place in my memory.

I tried to play "My world, my way" on NDS, but it's so long and repetitive I never completed it.

One of the few I completed, and last one I really loved playing is "Labyrinth no kanata" (beyond the labyrinth) on 3DS!

This is a game I played and kind of disgusted me, but I will give it another try because now I feel like I might like it lol.

Mine would be the SNES game Wizardry 5 "Heart of the Malestrom". It was the first game of this type I played and spent hours trying to find all the secrets.

Second fav is Dungeon Keeper on SNES too.

Hard to pick a favorite, but I'll have to go with Etrian Odyssey III. I've spent so many hours playing that game. Haven't played an EO game since with the same level of dungeon progression.
Also, this topic is great for discovering other DRPGs. I'll definitely be trying out some of the games that have been mentioned.

Etrian Oddysey 4. It took something great, and made it greater. Can't wait for the next entry on switch..

there's a new entry coming to the switch?

Does Phantasy Star on Master System count as a DRPG?
What with all the psuedo 3d dungeons.
I can never forget the song.

I bought that game on the switch. $7 seemed a bit much though. it looks very ancient, even more so than final fantasy 1.

Hard to pick a favorite, but I have always had a soft spot for one of the worst vaporware/launch delayed titles of all time Stonekeep.

Noticed recently that it's available on Steam, but after paying what I paid to pre-order that game and then waiting YEARS to get it, I feel like they should pay ME to play it, LOL

I paid six I think on a sale.
Shoulda waited but overall it's a definitive emulated version with an easy mode and info on the side.
The ps2 remake would have been a ton better but this is passable.
Personally the US master system version still holds some nostalgia for me even though I never had a memory card to save my game woth back then heh.
