My grandma got me Pokemon Red when it came out in the US.
My grandma was cool like that she liked SciFi B movies stuff like Attack of The Giant Spiders or something (idk if that exists but probably)
My parents were more like "YOUR VIDEO GAMES R SLOWIN DOWN OUR COMPOOTER WITH THEIR VIRUSUESZZ!!11" (but really it's just a shitty prebuilt system in the early 2000s)
My parents were cool with my brother and I playing games when we're kids. We were above-average students and have other hobbies, so they didn't lecture us about them. I think the sole exception was an online rpg my brother was hooked-on back in high school (interacting with strangers over the internet was a big no-no).
Yes. They were against too much Nintendo or PC games. BUT that got me into computers at a young age. Now as a parent, I dont mind my kids playing video games, as long as they have done chores or homework first. But KNOWING about video games also educated me as a parent so I know what video games my kids can and cant play. My 8 year old wanted to play GTA online. Yeah no. haha. Im all for video games as a parent and old school gamer.
Yeah, and it was awful as hell. They wouldn't buy me a computer because they were afraid games would affect me too much. I had to go to my friends' houses all the time to play. Because of the lack of games as a kid, I'm a total gamer now. Now it's just impossible to tear me away from the computer, it's not normal. I spend a lot of money on games. For example just yesterday I've bought some coaching on CS GO: https://eloboss.net/csgo-coaching And a few days ago I spent some money on skins. Parents, is this what you wanted?
Well my parents are thinking that spending way too much time at computer in my room by reinterpreting their words might make me blind completely permanently. Also some parents are thinking that videogames/playing with computer games as modern entertainment might raise massive murders genocide in reality. If only Fortnite Creative 2.0 might have classic level editor maybe at least somehow I would fix my symbolical toxic cyber relations with community members of Old Unreal Forums,Unreal Engine Forums,Sonic Retro(within its own Steam Community even),UT99.org,Jazz2Online,Reset Era,Sonic Stadium,UnrealSP.org,Doom World not counting Unreal Tournament 4 Forum shut down likewise also in case of Duke Nukem. Maybe I shouldn’t had said ”no more mister nice guy”. Maybe they should give me a chance. I wish time travelling might be real so I would go back in time preventing my own mistakes that right now I regret maybe I was way too much complaining. I really shouldn’t had done that in the first place like never.
For most, no but my parents were frowned at Grand Theft Auto (GTA) in 1999 after they saw negative news coverage on GTA, however, they let me play as long as I don't use gun in GTA. I was 11 years old at that time. They bought PS2 with GTA 3 for my Christmas in December 2001, months before GBATemp launched.
Probably I was behaving like cyber jerk myself. I want to redeem myself from now on. https://www.forbes.com/sites/insert...olence-stands-out-in-todays-gaming-landscape/
I also saw in some very old manuscripts regarding internet memes about Ancient,Medieval Eras that some kids were cutting someone’s bleeding head before chainsaw was and electricity were even discovered in history of humanity/mankind technological evolution of classic/modern entertainment. Also I guess it was mentioned in Netflix Black Mirror Bandersnatch,Chicken Robot on YouTube speaking of Pac-Man.

Well Pac-Man on YouTube Kids TV is even way much worse.
It seems something is wrong with my 5G mobile network right now.

Nah. My dad is a bit of a gamer and was the one buying all the games and consoles for me growing up. My mom still joins Mario Party & Kart on occasion, and when I was about 14 years old, we used to play them regularly.
I was banned from all forms of gaming for about a year and a half because my parents thought I was wasting my time, it being unhealthy, etc. And I mean I do get the unhealthy part, gaming was (and still is) a coping mechanism of mine and serves as a form of escapism, but if my parents wanted to "help" then they could have gone about it in a way like teaching restraint of it over restrictions, and, oh I dunno, actually trying to help the root of the trauma that caused me to need a coping mechanism in the first place?
Instead they decided to gaslight me, insult me for it, call me an addicted lazy piece of shit, took literally every form of entertainment (including BOOKS I might add) and just left me with absolutely NOTHING but School and Chores. For reference, that is an absolute hell for an ADHD person.
The funny thing I find about it is that they told me I should socialize more, which I mean makes sense right? Well they also never allowed me outside, I was put into home-school and was forbidden from using any sort of messaging or social media, and IRL Friends? Nope, that's not allowed either. Tf are those double standards?
I presently have video games again, but my god that 1 1/2 year(s) was horrible.
And probably needed Child Protective Services to pay them a visit. Not allowed outside? Can't have friends? No entertainment or even books? Homeschooling and chores only? WTF???

Well I mean, I was kind of allowed outside; but only under supervision. The reason I said that I wasn't allowed to was because I would need to ask permission and have one of my Parents accompany me - however they always said they were busy and / or didn't feel like it. So it might as well be what I said. But the rest; yeahhhhh it was bad but CPS might have been a bit overkill for the situation. I have those forms of entertainment again as well as being able to use social media -- and now I can go outside without supervision (only in the front-yard & in direct view of the cameras, but hey, an improvement is an improvement). Still in homeschool though.
Even though I live separately from them, at the time I lived with them they also thought it was a waste of time and that I was just wasting my life.
But I don't agree with that when you can make money or it's your hobby, it's okay.
For example I just recently bought a retro Blue PSP 3000 - Vibrant Blue PSP 3000 - Complete on the Retro Video Game Store and it really brings me pleasure, it brings me a nice childhood nostalgia, and having a console is very convenient in terms of what you can play anywhere.
The point is that if you play games it doesn't mean you won't achieve anything, the point is that you don't just do it and it doesn't do you any good, neither morally nor financially.
If you just don't work and don't do anything other than play, that's when it becomes a problem or even an addiction in some cases.
My parents weren't strictly agaisnt videogames, but weren't too keen on giving us too much freedom on them, either.
They were... ignorant. Back in the early 90s when all those vg scare stories started to pop up, they would set up a very narrow window for us to play, and fell right on the anti-videogame propaganda from the late 90s, thankfully it didn't took them long to understand that if i ever became a psycho it wouldn't be the videogames' fault, but mine and mine alone.
They really aren't bad parents overall, but yeah - some of the things they did really sucked. So, none taken.

i swear my parents wanted to blame every part of being a teenager, and when i got in trouble in school on video games. i never really played violent games until much later. not because they stopped me, but mainly because i lacked interest or found violent games to be boring, and hating the popular thing. i was that kid, around 12-16 known for playing nintendo games.
abuse and being picked on at school really did many things to my mental health but yknow, it's all the video games.
"new thing i don't understand is bad". being gaslit and provoked by family also didn't help.
i also don't see it being the case with other harmless hobbies.
what bothered me the most was when my parents got me a console at my National sons day 2022 and a handheld and then one day it was gone, because they had sold it. without telling me before they did so.

forgot to add, but thinking about it. they wanted to blame me for certain things but still ended up buying me games. funny how that works. pick a side
To be honest, I've always thought it was a little hypocritical. Sports and e-sports are basically the same thing, just dressed up differently. Personally, I find both to be extremely boring to watch, but I understand why people enjoy them.
In any case, I don't think you'll have much luck convincing your parents, because it appears that all they want to do is find something to do as a family that everyone will enjoy. So, why not make your own suggestions? Perhaps a boardgame night would be enjoyable.
