When you run into the abbreviation WTF you automatically think "what the fuck"
But with LOL you're far more likely to read the letters as something like "lawl"

It's because "lol" looks like a legitimate word, it has a vowel in it and can be pronounced. "wtf" has no vowels and doesn't look like a word so we recognize it as an acronym initialism.
