Hardware PS3 CFW - Bluray drive running all x seconds

hi folks,

i've bought an used PS3 with CFW installed for a friend of mine. Ive tested the playstation and started some games etc pp
i've noticed that the bluray drive is running up all x seconds (its maybe 5 to 7 seconds) for 2 seconds. you can clearly hear that the laser is moving and i can see the BD LED in front of the drive flashing.

The console is doing that all the time without breaks, as long as the console is powered up.

There is no BD inside of the drive

Does somebody know why the drive is working every 5 - 7 seconds without any action ?

I don't know, but possibly a disc inserted sensor being activated? (that's all the blue light means, although it's ultimately software controlled)
