Hacking R4I 2018 SDHC Dual Core crashing even with newest firmware

Alright so, a friend of mine procured a r4i SDHC Dual Core 2018(yellow PCB with the website) with a particular oddity: that won't run on 11.6(friend's 3DS, non-flashed) but strangely runs on 11.2(flashed)
So far i've formatted it(quick format, size adjustment off) and copied the 3.9 firmware to no results. Did he got a bad card or have the clones gotten so good that they made a 1:1 copy of the card?

EDIT: just tried it without any sd card on. Same error.

Either I'm high, or not. But it could be that 11.6 patches out the cart.
If anything, does the firmware say it supports 11.6?

according to their page (http://www.r4isdhc.com/) they do, so i dunno.
