So lately, I discovered this thing call ReScene/PyRescene.
It's a thing that allows you to recreate the 'original' scene archives from the extracted files (avi, 3ds etc.).

I need it because I'd like to archive my 3DS scene collection as they're all extracted and it's taking up way too much space! Unfortunately, I've got no idea how to use this as it's a command line tool, and even after going on loads of tutorials, I've barely been able to make any progress.

If anyone has had any experience or think they might know how to work it, please tell me! It's very appreciated, and I'll give the dude that helps the most a copy of Populous (as gratitude and incentive).

Yes, I could archive it normally, but I would like to see if I can get this working for future things and just because I'm OCD and I like everything 'perfect'. :P

Thanks in advance.

(yes, there is a GUI version, except it doesn't work with anything other than AVI/MKV files)

The extra files in "scene" archives are crap... why would you want them? So you can have a .txt or .nfo file that says "Cracked by..." or some crappy ascii art?

I'm not really after the sfv/nfo files and stuff (though they come with it).
All I really want is for them to be packed the way I downloaded them so I can save some space.

Though I can certainly get behind setting up a SRR set for whatever you like this seems a bit needless in your case if you can just otherwise compress them normally (they are encrypted which tends to kill compressibility and most of the saving will probably be the padding to make it up to standard chip sizes). Indeed they might even do better as basic RAR (I am not sure of 3ds rules, if there even are any, and what they say) vs a nice 7z.
The only other time it would have mattered would be for patching archives, something that nobody does any more as we all moved to proper patching methods (to say nothing of the fact you are probably not going to get a 16 meg 3ds archive which would allow for that).

Still you are going to need 3ds Scene rules. I have not seen any and there are none on http://scenerules.irc.gs/ so we have to dig deeper.
Presumably they will be a follow on from DS Scene rules (several of the same groups, such things usually follow on like this) though you now have a problem as there are two sets where Venom signed up to one and BAHAMUT and NRP have signed the other. Legacy, Kirin, ABSTRAKT, CONTRAST and Wombat are undeclared there and several of those are very long term and highly respected Scene groups. Independents are possibly a different matter again. To further add to the fun there some groups also said forget both of those new sets.

Now you could possibly figure it out. It seems split archives are happening in places, rar is still the order of the day (and though it could theoretically vary between versions it is not so likely) and I am not sure about levels of compression (could be basic or could be full, I doubt it is m0/no compression), sadly splits seem to be of different sizes.
This sounds like an awful lot of work.

Why not just download them again as long as they're easily available? Should be around 300 GB for the whole set (mine is 200 GB, but I'm missing ~100 newer releases).

Too big really for me.

Anyhow, I've finally figured it out.
Some of the LGC releases don't work, but the rest do fine. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
