rrod occurs due to a few things. the dvd drive, according to the lead engineer, was forgotten about when it comes to heat, so both cpu and gpu are essentially boxed in. and, the fan tunnel/shroud has gaps in it. neither of these things were fixed with any phat 360. what has been done is that the chips are smaller, so they dispense less heat. another issue is that the solder is lead free to conform to green laws. lead solder has a higher melting point I believe, so it should last longer. however, the melting point of solder is far above what the system would reach by several hundred degrees. the solder joints develop cracks from the constant heating up, then cooling down. the fan abruptly stops, just like the ps3, when you turn the system off, so it doesn't continue to cool the system down. they fixed this with at least rest mode on the ps4. however, turning off a ps4 is an abrupt stop as well. I don't know about the xbox one as I've never owned one. this is only for rrod, so if you had another problem, it's probably fine either way.
