Super Mario Advance 2 (GBA)

Well, I introduced my girlfriend to roms a few weeks ago and she was into it right from the start, which is pretty amazing i think.
but anyway, we decided to play games simultaneously and because she had just started on Super Mario Advance 2, i decided to play it together with her.
I played through the game quite easy, whereas my girlfriend had some trouble with some parts of the game, especially in the beginning and close to the end.
After finishing the game I decided to write a review about it.

Story (7/10)
First off, I'd like to say something about the story. It as in every other Mario game I have ever played. Princess peach is in danger, Bowser has kidnapped her and you have to get her back.
You have to play through 7 different lands, with each an other boss, to get to bowsers castle. From my own experience, I have noticed that most of the time, the last level is very hard, while the boss itself is quite easy to beat.
After beating a certain castle (the last level of every land is a castle) you see an animation of mario destroying the castle and a summary of what you have accomplished so far in the story.
The story is rather dull and it's the same over and over again. But well, a storyline isn't really necessairy in a platform game like Mario.

Gameplay (8/10)
The gameplay is the same as every other mario 2D platform-game, you jump a little, you collect coins and you have finish the level within 300 seconds.
I must say, it feels very good, but on the other hand... it's the same as all the other Mario games.
The controls are very easy and the first few levels are quite easy so that you can get used to the controls.
As I said before, bosses are quite easy, which is a big disappointment to me. Bosses should be hard to beat in my opinion.
In every world there is a secret passway hidden that leads to star world. I haven't found all of the Star Road Portals yet so I can't tell you what happens if you beat all the Star World levels.
During your game you come through these worlds:
- Yoshi's Island
- Donut Plains
- Vanilla Dome
- Cookie Mountain
- Forest of Illusion
- Chocolate Island
- Valley of Bowser
- Star World
Overall I think the gameplay is pretty good, even though it has been used many times before by Nintendo. On the other hand, If you have beaten one, you will beat them all.
This was definitly one of the easiest 2D Mario games I have ever played. Not that it's a bad thing, but I guess little children will have a lot more fun with this game than I did.
It's enjoyable for a few hours, maybe a few days, but it's kind of doing the same thing over and over again, so the replay value of the game is very low.
The game isn't much of a challange because there are no hard bosses, no really tough levels nor hard puzzles. Just plain platform fun, nothing special in my opinion.

Sound (7/10)
Happy Nintendo sounds, as usual. the same formula is used for every other Mario game.
Good quality sound though, its a clear sound without any disruptions. Catchy tunes and funny sounds.
That's a + on the one hand, but on the other hand a - too, after a while the tunes start to annoy you.
When there is less than 100 seconds left on the clock, the music will play somewhat faster, which can really piss you off, but you will have to live with that.
Overall I think the music is pretty good.

Graphics (7/10)
Well, i guess it depends on what screensize you play this game. For example, the quality of the graphics on size 1 (VBA) is a lot better than when I do full screen, but it plays a lot easier on full screen.
Anyway, I'll rate this on the size 2 (VBA) mode. which is 2x as big as normal.
Nintendo games are often of good graphical quality, which is true in this case. The graphics are above the standard i guess, a lot of 'happy', bright colours are used.
Very little black/dark colors, unless its inevitable, but most of the game looks very cheerful and happy. Actually a little bit kiddy.

Conclusion (7/10)
Overall I think this is a very good game, though it misses the originality. You feel like you have seen it all before and done it all before.
For those who have never played a mario-platform game before, its definitely a good one, for people who have already beaten the other mario games.... this is nothing new. Also the little bonusgame (the original Mario Bros. game) wasn't enough to raise the mark a bit.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite
    for people with beefy hands.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."
