The need for speed team have gone and spun a mini franchise from an existing franchise despite the main franchise moving on (think modern warfare 2 even though call of duty 5 appeared between the two games). This being said Need 4 Speed shift was something of a radical departure from all previous entries in that it focused on track racing and the like rather than the more street racing and the like the franchise drifted into. How this will play out is a different matter entirely.
