In the wii u version the limit is 256 costumes.
We can add more costumes for the 3ds version but we don't know how to add files so it shows the appropriate picture, csp portrait and stock icon.

Does it show the error CSP (kinda like the DLC characters on the main screen) or does it straight up not work?

My bad it's 263 costumes for one character, meaning everyone can have 263 different costumes.

AFAIK this is only possible on wii u currently

Yep. A pretty good one I might add. I'm actually working on an OoT Link. Actually, only the textures are what's left pretty much.
