Lately there have been some malicious users spamming the site, but even before, occasionally there is 'generic' spam, like most forums get.
Can we not make the first 5, the first 10 posts of a user hidden and need to be approved by a mod to be shown?
So, other users will see nothing, or simply see 'awaiting moderation'.
And once a mod comes along and looks in the list, they can either approve the user/post or ban them.

It seems other forums have some things like this, why can't we have it here?
Is it too much work or something?

I just hate seeing people post junk here :)

They couldn't get two or three or four volunteers solely to help out with the approval stuff?
Is it even possible to give just approval powers? Oo

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I would volunteer in a heartbeat...

I suggested this over at Project Pokemon back when spambots were a big deal. Other staff members quickly pointed out the obvious flaw: Do I really want to approve the first few posts of every new member?

I doubt they'll go for it. But they may look for more moderators if they deem it necessary. If they do want more moderators, I volunteer. *looks at the moderator reading this ;)*

We can obviously notice some people coming back tho (especially if they update their Twitter with their new attempts COUGH)

Count me in also, I really don't like the spam either but I'll be honest I find the PeterMary threads funny, the only thing that makes them bad is LOOK HOW LONG THE LATEST HAS BEEN UP ITS BEEN LIKE 2 HOURS

Don't get me wrong; this would be a fantastic idea!
The only things is that the mods on this forum would be way to lazy to do that. They'd probably do it at first....but then after the first 500 members they'd get tired of doing it. The thing is, if we were to add that option to the forum, the mods would be focusing more on new profiles rather than the actual threads. There are a couple obstacles in this idea. The site would need more staff

Not really much that can be done besides banning him each time. That is, unless we want to inconvenience new members and add significantly more work to the moderator's current load.

Mayhap a new rank of staff, that anyone with over [Set Number] lf posts could apply for?
That's not completely fair, however. People need experience. Just because one person has over, perhaps, 1000 posts, doesn't mean they're qualified. It should be based on their contributions and experience

Like I said you can't measure that tho so that's why you would APPLY

On my own forum I did what @cearp is suggesting, but only for the first post. It's normally pretty obvious if the first post is from a troll, or a spambot. Of course it's not perfect (I did it to combat spam bots that were getting past ReCaptcha), but it's something.

If you do it for just the first post, it may delay a new member for a few hours, or a day, but that's better than having a 10 page thread of people trolling the troll, and having literally no way to stop the troll from just signing up for a new account.

True. As much as I would enjoy terminating spam, I'd probably be a horrid staff member all-in-all :P
I did say apply for tho :P

I think it should be based on reputation.
Then maybe the general temp could elect some members? That would be best for messuring reputation imo

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
