Sony is now opening up cross-play on PS4 to all willing developers

For the longest time, PlayStation kept itself out of most matters relating to cross-platform online play, preferring for PS4 gamers to stick to playing against those on the same platform, or against PC users, at most. Tension began building, as players clamored for more open cross-play with those on other consoles and systems, and eventually, PlayStation gave in, slowly allowing for a beta form of cross-play on select games, starting with Rocket League and Fortnite. Things might start to get even better, as this week, in an interview, Sony stated that "PS4 cross-play efforts have officially moved out of the beta stage".

the PS4's cross-play efforts have officially moved out of the beta stage, meaning that the console can support cross-play on any titles that studios provide the functionality for. This month's Modern Warfare may be the first major title to take advantage of it at launch, and likely won't be the last.

This means, so long as any developer requests it, they'll be allowed to add cross-play with Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms on PlayStation 4 titles. According to the interview, the first game to make use of the fully-featured cross-play functionality will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), likely paving the way for more titles to either retroactively add cross-play post-launch, or add them to upcoming releases. PUBG will also be rolling out cross platform play for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 users this month.

Good guy Sony. :yayps3:

I just hope that there is an option to also only play with people on the same console. With certain games, playing with different setups can give one player an advantage. Like FPS controller vs keyboard + mouse.

But having it open to other platforms so you can play with your friends is great.

This kind of things don't happen in a day, if anything he likely prepared all of this before leaving.
I guess so. He/Some people at Sony probably realized that the anti crossplay decision hurt them in the long run, but getting that sorted out and changing things always takes a while.

Maybe he took his hat and left because it was his decision that cost Sony quite a bit of money. Ah, it doesn't really matter, no point in speculating. I'm just glad that things are improving now.
