Spaceworld 1997 CD-ROM trailer of cancelled Earthbound 64 sells for over $300, features new footage

Mother series fans in Japan eventually got to play Mother 3, while the west languished, never able to play the game in English, at least in an official capacity. However, there's a version of Mother 3 that neither region ever got to experience: the original Nintendo 64 version. Despite "Mother 3", or "Earthbound 64" being cancelled and resuming development in a new form on the Game Boy Advance, it's always fun to see how games came to be, whether it be through test footage or beta builds. Which is why an incredibly short trailer for some CD-ROM footage of the cancelled game ended up selling for over $300. Twiitter user Zen64 purchased the CD, which was from a Nintendo Company Report, and featured a Spaceworld 1997 for Mother 3 on the Nintendo 64. There's been footage of the game unearthed in the past, such as a teaser from Spaceworld 1996 that was only discovered in 2019, or the original IGN trailer for the game, so this isn't the first time gameplay has been seen, but a lot of the footage in Zen64's CD-ROM is new. Ripped as-is, without sound, you can see a full 25 seconds of what the game would have been like, had it ever been released.

It's just a CD containing a video trailer with (probably) official Nintendo print. Like demos from good old days..

I think $300 is an ok price for an enthusiast, still a bit exaggerated. They could have simply uploaded it to Nintendo YouTube channel.

300$.
For a cd.
Because of a trailer of a trashed game.
People are weird. I hope a meteorite wipes us out of the universe.
We are becoming ever more stupid.

I'm still hopeful that they will make a remake of the Eartbound trilogy in 3D.Even with camera rotation and cinematics

Nintendo could use the clay style of promotional art.

The clay style with the tilt shift look from Link's Awakening would be awesome.

At least not as bad as the recent deal of Super Mario 64 copy that sold for $1M. That game is available on e-shop and was released for NDS too so...

As someone who beat Mother 3 when it came out in English unofficially, I have to say I think the game could have been even better if it was in 3D. Nintendo needs to do something with this IP. Either they sell it or reboot it. They gotta pick one. I doubt they sell it because they have too big of egos to sell domain IPs they're not using.

I have my doubts that a beta of this rom will be of much benefit to the scene. It looks like the project was dropped quite early in development. Other than just seen some of what was made running on real hardware (or the emus), nothing I’ve seen suggests they even finished any game logic. Maybe they’ll resurrect the series one day. I’m not holding my breath, though.

i dont think nintendo ever sold an ip at all, so i doubt it, sometimes they remember some old ips and give it a second spin like punch out on wii, advance wars remakes on switch and so on, so maybe someday they make an hd remastered trilogy release.

Better off selling some things instead of never using them. That just shows arrogance.

Awesome! Hopefully this means even more content related to the game will be unearthed in the future.
Like a dump of the game...haha...at least I can dream.

Some have suggested that the questionable success of F-Zero GP Legend have made them less inclined to try such ventures again.

Yeah that is true too. Sony does the same thing too with some of their IPs.
sony is way worse than nintendo since they let their ips be dead

ape escape dead since ps2
resistance dead since ps3
sly cooper dead since ps3
jak and daxter dead since ps2(ps3 got trilogy remaster but still dead)
syphon filter dead since ps2
twisted metal dead since ps3
socom dead since ps3

So yeah they had the most sold and lucrative last gen console and they didnt do a single entry or even a remaster on this ips that are all dead for years.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
