Port of the popular cross-platform rhythm game simulator.

StepMania is a free and open source, cross-platform rhythm game. It supports common key-based rhythm game formats (including 4-panel and 5-panel dance games among others), as well as Switch controllers (joycons recommended for their individual buttons), keyboard and dance pad controllers (ex: Gamecube ones with adapter). It is customizable with user-made add-ons such as themes, and provides an integrated editor for creating your own simfiles.

Getting Started

Grabbing Binaries

You can download the latest release here on github: https://github.com/retronx-team/stepmania-nx/releases.
Extract the archive in the /switch folder on your SD Card. Then, run the game from the hbmenu using hbl.
Be sure to run it as an app, it won't work as an applet (you may get a black screen and/or crashes).

Song Installation

You can install songs by simply putting them in a subfolder of your Songs-folder in the directory you installed Stepmania to. You can find for example a few packs of songs on Stepmania Online http://stepmaniaonline.net/index.php?page=downloads or Otaku's Dream Website here : http://www.otakusdream.com/downloads/.

Slight necro-posting, but I just want to thank OP very much for making this StepMania port despite not actually owning a Switch.

Why you might ask? Because AFAIK this should by far be the only version of StepMania that runs on a platform with very active emulator development that isn't natively a mere 272p or 192p since, for some crazy reason, there never was an adequately-functional Wii homebrew port/recreation (which still kind of burns me up) despite there being two recreations for the DS (DsDsR and DDS) and one port and one recreation for the PSP (PSPMania and PSPR). My only guess is that people specifically wanted handheld versions and saw no need for home-console versions when the PC version exists.

The main reason I care about being able to run it in an emulator is for a much more elegant solution to being cross-platform and/or platform independent considering that I've still got 2000+ StepMania songs from 15+ years ago originating from an old Win98SE PC that ran on a 533MHz Celeron. Sadly 2 or 3 songs even got corrupted between PC transfers, one of which is an unknown remix of (green) Brinstar from Super Metroid that I got from BemaniStyle before that site had major data loss sometime in the mid-2000s.

(also mini-rant: when someone asked on Reddit two years ago about a StepMania port on Wii, there was one idiot that at least didn't get up-voted that said that there was absolutely no way that StepMania would be able to run on the Wii... like what the crap dude, that 533Mhz Pentium 3-based Celeron in my Win98SE PC is definitely a slower CPU than the 729Mhz PPC 750-derived CPU in the Wii in terms of both IPC and clockrate, and that Win98SE PC was also running a measly Radeon 7000, no not Radeon HD 7000 nor RX 7000, but non-HD non-RX Radeon 7000 over a PCI non-express slot)

ok thx.
I tried stepmania on the switch with a song with a music video in background... it was below 20 - 30 FPS ... not that great

Video playback uses ffmpeg under the hood, which is not currently hardware accelerated on the switch. You can remove the video files I guess, also several of my old packs run fine still because the videos are at a low enough resolution
