Tesla - The Nintendo Switch Overlay Menu

fhwyjbd.png

Hey all.
I'd like to introduce to you, Tesla: My answer to the growing need for proper ingame front ends for sysmodules.

What is this?

  • Tesla consists of three individual parts. nx-ovlloader, the Tesla menu and libtesla.
    • nx-ovlloader is basically nx-hbloader ported to run as a sysmodule. It runs in the background and loads overlay NROs (.ovl files) given to it.
    • Tesla Menu is the equivalent to the hbmenu. It's the initial thing loaded by nx-ovlloader and acts as a hub for you to select all other overlays.
    • libtesla is where it becomes interesting for developers. It's an easy to use library that handles layer creation, UI drawing and all the overlay UX. It makes it very easy to create a new overlay for anything
  • A frontend for sysmodules that before required either a homebrew or a config file to change settings or used sounds or the LED to give the user feedback.

What is this not?

  • A tool that lets you create overlays that are always visible. Overlays can get unloaded way to easily for this.
  • An excuse to port absolutely everything to a overlay. Nobody's going to need a title manager overlay. If you consider making a overlay, keep it simple. You don't have a whole lot of memory to work with.

How do I use this?

First of all, download the latest release of nx-ovlloader and the Tesla Menu from the GitHub Release page and extract it onto your SD card.
After a reboot, hold down L and DPad Down and push on the right joy stick to bring up Tesla at any time. Navigation works as you imagine it.
Similar to normal homebrews, you place your .ovl files in the /switch/.overlays folder on your SD card.

Notice

Make sure to use the latest Atmosphere release when trying this as older versions ( as the one SX OS uses too ) probably won't have enough memory available for this to run. Overlays do take a lot of space so nx-ovlloader reserves 6MB. 2MB for framebuffers and around 4MB for overlay developers to use in their overlays.

Sorry I don't get it. NX-OVLLoader is the sysmodule which allows you to use OVLs on your console

either https://github.com/WerWolv/nx-ovlloader/releases and the new fork https://github.com/zdm65477730/nx-ovlloader do not comes with any example OVL, both have this files:

Code:
NX-OVLLoader.zip:
\---atmosphere
    \---contents
        \---010000000007E51A
            | exefs.nsp
            | toolbox.json
            |
            \---flags
                    boot2.flag

which example OVL is loading your console?
I was lazy to go to PC so I just updated from Homebrew App store...

And the NX-ovlloader 1.07 from there in the "installed files list" also have:

U- switch/.overlays/example.ovl

Then when I opened Tesla menu I had that crap that has some sliders and colorful geometry (still cool to see and then delete it) :D

I don't know what is example.ovl from HOMEBREW APP STORE is not related to TESLA, nor NX-OVLLoader.

Ok, I just downloaded, and that example is a example of OVERLAY code which you can find on the source code, is a simple menu, using the basic elements, really does nothing.

thanks, gonna wipe everything tesla related and start fresh then

so strating fresh was not enough, you also need to update to atmo 1.6.2 and FW 17 for the crash to go away, thanks for the help!
same issue as before (good ol' error error 010041544d530000) started reapearing again after I updated atmo to 1.7.0, Totk crashes if mods are installed along with telsa overlay being used.
Before, updating everything was the key but this time updating HOS to 18 didn't fix the issue.
anyone else playing totk with mods along with tesla overlay is able to launch?
update I fixed it: I removed every one of my sysmodule and recreated my content folder, now it boots with mods and tesla, aahh video games

@Xdqwerty, Yeah, I'd recommend having another OS just in-case you want to play games.

At least Linux doesn't contain spyware than what Windows has.

    @SylverReZ, cuz of lag?
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, No. Whenever you use the internet on Windows, Microsoft collects personal data and installs bloatware that isn't necessarily needed, such as Edge.

I recall @impeeza mentioned some trick about not having bloatware when installing windows where you set up your country to "world" or smh like that

Yes, you can debloat the operating system, but in some cases for me it just reinstalls them.

I also recall my brother downloded a "non bloated" version of windows 11 on his pc

@Xdqwerty yes, when you are installing Windows on the first steps you are asked for your current location, you MUST to select «international» so no bloatware is installed, because the bloatware is location based. if this night I have some time I will setup a VM and take screenshots.
