I think you could technically consider them emoji. emoji is a Japanese word meaning, emotion character. a smile would be displaying an emotion, would it not?
From a linguistic standpoint, I suppose, but emoji is specifically a standard set of smilies.

ah, they're referring to picture based on that link. I just assumed emo was referring to emotion, since ji can be character by itself like Kanji (chinese character).

The Word emoji, indeed comes from Japanese but means e-moji, where moji is "Character - letter - symbol". "emotion" is not in the name. is more like e-mail, business, etc.

We fondly call them emotes, don't we?

You're all wrong.
emoji comes from prefix "e" and japanese word "moji".
Together means: "Character / Writing of Edo era"

So a man goes to the doctor because his boner wont go down. As he is laying in the hospital bed, with his thing propped up in the air, a fly is flying around and landing on the tip and bothering him, so he calls in the nurse. The nurse comes in, swats at the fly but can't quite reach it, so she climbs his boner to get better aim. After a few tries of swatting and sliding back down, she says sorry I cant get it. He says keep going, a few more tries, and I can shoot the fly down.
