The PC ports from the 1990s is one of the coolest things that has happened the last ½ year for the (N)3DS. So I thought I would make an overview for people that don’t read that much in this forum. So they can navigate and discuss about all these wonderful games and their 3DS ports!

ScummVM (1987 --> )
ScummVM 3DS (TheCruel)

Wolfenstein 3D (1992)
ctrWolfen - (Rinnegatamante)

Doom I (1993)
prboom3ds - (elhobbs)

Doom II (1994)
prboom3ds - (elhobbs)

Heretic (1994)
heretic3ds - (elhobbs)

Quake 1 (1996)
Spectre3ds - (elhobbs)
ctrQuake - (MasterFeizz)

Duke Nukem 3D (1996)
EDuke32 - (MasterFeizz)

Hexen II (1997)
ctrHexenII - (Rinnegatamante)
hexen2 - (elhobbs)

Let me know what I have missed, as I have probably missed a lot. I will add those then! :)
Also, I havent tested some of the ports. So there can be a couple that are in an early development state. Let us know about that.

Are there any other 1990s PC games that you would like to have ported for the 3DS in the future?

EDIT I: All the likes this post gets goes obviously to elhobbs, Rinnegatamante & MasterFeizz, not me :P

I really don't know if it's possible, but a Rollercoaster Tycoon or a SimCity port would be awesome! :)

The Elder Scrolls (Probably not possible at all). But Hexen is amazing, if the bugs get fixed it would be one of the best homebrew available for the 3DS.

I would like soneone to port Doom 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein to 3DS while we are at it, despite not being 90's era games (RTCW is close as it is late 2001). I realize this will probably never happen as the New 3DS specs would probably be just enough to run RTCW and the work involved would be huge.

Well, The Elder Scrolls: Arena & The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall should be possible, I think. Daggerfall would actually be very cool!!! :D

I know this isn't necessarily 1990s. But I'd love to see these.
A Cave Story port that isn't RetroArch-based and still uses the data files from the PC versions (allowing hacks) would be fun. I tried modding the 3DS eShop port to no avail.
Syobon Action would be great too!
And perhaps Super Mario War - it was ported to Wii.

There are people working on an open source Morrowind, but that's far from being viable to use on the 3DS. I'm actually happy with what we've got, it's very nice to have those classics on the 3DS.

Huh, Super Mario War is definitely the PSP game homebrew i used the most (and probably the only real reason why i had Time Machine installed for a long time on my PSP2000). If i can find sourcecodes for the PSP version maybe i could give it a try.

Im also very happy with what we got right now. Even though some of the ports mentioned in OP needs small updates to be fully playable. But if we gets a couple of more 1990s PC ports, I would be even more happy :P

I absolutely adore Duke Nukem 3D.

Of the ported games mentioned in OP. I have enjoyed Quake 1 most. Then Heretic. And then Duke Nukem 3D, those ports are near perfect! But if/when Hexen II gets more stable and with c-stick/nub support, Im sure I will like Hexen II best :D

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
