ROM Hack Update my new 3ds xl luma

Can someone tell me how I should update luma on my new 3ds xl ?
There is a new update and it keeps asking if i want to install it, but I want to be shore it's safe by updating Luma first on the system,
but I can't find out how to do it.. can someone help me trough please?

Hold (Select) while turning on the 2|3DS. On the top of the upper screen it should say

Luma3DS v??? configuration

To get everything updated:

For version ≤ v7.0.5 A9LH → B9S
For version = v7.1 Updating B9S
For version ≥ v8.0 Replace boot.firm and boot.3dsx with the latest version and do the finalizing setup.

These are instructions to not only update Luma but most homebrew software as well.

Luma3DS v.9.1.. Thank you I will use the finalizing setup for 10.0.1

After I changed the boot.firm and the boot.3dsx I put back the micro sd and put on the system and now I just update it safe or do I have to do something first ?

Online update to the latest official firmware is safe.
