Mysterious, no. Just vague enough that you can do a self-insert for your masochistic political beliefs, yes. "Bought and sold" implies capitalism's involvement, and I'd very much agree it has a cancerous effect on any nation's democracy.

Regardless, embracing fascism/authoritarianism is like hooking your dick up to a car battery. It's not an experiment you can repeat and realistically expect different results from, and it doesn't even have the benefit of a honeymoon phase at the beginning like capitalist democracy did.
