Emulation VBA won't read Emerald .sav file

I'm trying to load emerald on VBA and load the save from my acekard 2i (AKAIO 1.6 RC2 + EZ Flash 3in1) so that I can evolve my kadabra into an alakazam by linking but VBA will not read the .sav file. It's originally a gba.sav file but I renamed it to .sav and the save file is the exact same name as the rom and they are in the same directory. I've tried importing the save file but no dice. I am using version 1.8 beta 3.

change the save sizes to match before importing. your save size should be 128 on VBA like this:

After selecting Flash 128K it still trims the save file to 64KB and it doesn't load my save like before.

you can just edit the save file directly and change your kadabra into an alakazam and skip vba all together. Your probably going to need to google pokemon save hacking for info on what to change.

Strip off the first 16 bytes of the save file with an hex editor.
