I'm not sure if this is the correct section for this post, but while I love my Vita PCH-1000 and it's superb OLED screen, perfect PSP/PSX Game play via Adrenaline, controls, and ergonomic feel, I have seriously considered a GPD XD for emulation.

Since the GPD XD is based on Android, I would be able to play Android games and many of the great emulators for Android. Plus, microSD cards are much cheaper, and larger than the largest 64gb Vita memory card.

Can someone that perhaps has both a Vita and GPD XD comment on the pros and cons of each? How is the GPD XD screen and D-pad/analog sticks compared to the Vita? I realize homebrew and emulation is still pretty new on Vita, but it seems to have a lot of potential for better native Vita emulators, and I currently still use many PSP emulators on it.

Get a PSP Go.

Small, lightweight and very portable! - I bought one last month, fantastic device. PS1, PSP, Minis and LOADS of emulators to go with it.

I don't like the PSP Go. It never felt right, being that it is smaller. I like the larger OLED screen on my Vita. I currently play all the PSP games, PAP Minis, and emulators for PSP on my Vita via Adrenaline.

I am hoping to see someone's opinion on a Vita vs a GPD XD - especially if they have both devices.

vita is better because GPD not run psp games very well, with gpd you need overclock it for better to run psp games, but this reduce battery(very much).

Nvidia Shield portable is amazing, granted, but the price is very...high these days. The GPD XD would be my personal choice. Not only are the controls/buttons much better, it is a multi-entertainment device with HDMI capabilities.

I think it depends on whether or not you care about N64 Emulation.
If you do, I would get a Shield.
If you don't, i would get a <3.60 Vita
If you are tight on cash, get a PSP/PSP GO

well, GPD has no Bluetooth, its old so games aren't optimized.

PS vita, has overpriced Mem cards,

Thats all i can think of
Newest version of the GPD XD supports bluetooth, if I am correct. I think the old version did not support it

i dunno i got my nvidia S.P for $150 on ebay about 3 months ago and im still loving it , mostly dreamcast games .. but still .. Half Life 1 & 2 , Portal , I Currently playing DOOM 3 Pc port and yes you can plug it into a HDMI to your Tv ... i had a GPD XD , the Screen was cheap and nasty compared to other handhelds i own ....and it died on me and it wasnt really all that powerful but decent enough for EMU's but alas it only lasted about 4 months .. but my Vita OLED is still good as new after maybe 5 years or more

I already have the Vita, and using emus on it, but I would like an Android based game portable, since it would probably take years for Vita emus to be even at PSP's level. I have no prob keeping the Vita for playing Vita, PSP, and PSX emus. An Android portable will be for all other retro systems and Android games. My 3DS XL will be for 3DS and DS/DSi

How is the Nvidia Shield Portable D-pad? That's a huge deal for me.

The very few actual native emulators that the ps vita system has were ported over from Rejuvenate to Henkaku for the most part. Otherwise it's pretty much just retroarch that is around and that isn't optimized with ps vita hardware in mind if i remember correctly, just pc, mac, android, and i think ios. Might be better to stick with an android device for emulation.

I think the wii u scene might have that same problem, mainly only having retroarch around and everyone got comfortable with that so no standalone emulators are made from what i know of.

The D-Pad for the shield portable is not very good in my opinion. It uses the Xbox-360 D-Pad, which if you know, is not that good. HUGE turn off for me.

Isn't the Nvidia Shield Android powered?
If that's so you can easily use whatever other controller you want to use.
Although if it's the NS Portable, I'm not sure how many options there are in terms of controllers for it.

Yep, then in that case, the OP has several options.
I will list them from best to worst:
  1. If money is not an issue, go for an Nvidia Shield (TV/Portable). This has easily the best compatibility in terms of emulation and controllers to play with.
  2. If you are somewhat short on money, you can go for a PS Vita <3.60, so you can hack it, put RetroArch in it and then still enjoy PSP/PS1 games as well thanks to the native support for them in the Vita.
  3. If you are extremely short on money, then get a PSP Slim or something similar. You can get quite a decent amount of emulators for it and also play PSP and PS1 games. Beware though, as the emulation for this system might not go beyond the 16-bit era.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.
