Windows XP and 10, XP for generally being a small OS whilst having long term support for it and just well working well for many years and 10 because Forza and DX12 and I guess maybe for being overall better than 8 (I liked 8/8.1)

Windows XP for the UI, Win 2000 for the sound effects and windows 7 for the compatibility. However in recent years I have come to like macOS more due to its efficiency and performance on a hackintosh.

It's a tough battle between Windows XP and 7.

XP was fantastic for several reasons, if you take a look back nowadays you might find it primitive but back then it was a huge step forward in both user friendliness (compared to win9x) and features, bringing many of the ones introduced in win2000 from the pro market segment to the home one. Finally, once you'd install SP2 (or 3 later on) it would become even better, fixing many security bugs and also backporting some features from Vista.

7 on the other hand was pretty much what Vista should've been in the first place. It stepped up security while toning down UAC, which was crucial in ensuring that the OS was secure, and improved compatibility both hardware and older applications. Talking about hardware, advances in computing and better code optimization meant that it didn't take nearly as many system resources as Vista, so it felt quite snappy.

...In a nutshell, by heart I'd choose XP. But if I take the nostalgia glasses off I'd choose 7.
Honourable mention: Debian, easily my favourite Linux distro as it has the right amount of lightweightness and autoconfiguration, plus it literally supports every major microarchitecture available so it'll run on anything.

It's still very beta, but I'm sure it will be GuixSD when it's ready. For more basic tasks, I quite like OpenBSD. The most impressive overall is obviously TempleOS. RIP Terry.

When i was young, i used for so many Linux Ubuntu from 9-12, to replace my old XP and later Vista with full of viruses.
It was fun and highly instructive learning a new to use a new "free"(back at time i didn't know what exact definition of free and open source) OS and tons of "free" programs, and for the 1st time in my i didn't need to find cracks/viruses to activate my winrar or NERO to burn isos for wii lul.

I still remember it had hard time to support STEAM when it was launched on Linux and i went through hell tried to install/compile xbox360 wireless receiver's driver but without luck, then i gave up entirely and came back to Windows 7.

Toss up between DOS Shell and Microsoft Bob, because if someone knows what either of them are it starts an interesting conversation.

On desktop, Windows XP because nostalgia and also because I think it had (and still has) the best looks out of all Windows OSes. I've tried replicating its looks on Windows 10, but my experiments with Classic Shell have been buggy to say the least.

On mobile, it's Android, because it has the most freedom out of all the mobile OSes. Also, Material is bae.

I know what it is because i have experience with running VMs.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
