I do all three. I do #1 when I'm far from the Wii, #2 when I'm near the Wii and #3 before I sleep (because I set my router to power save at midnight and it goes back on when I wake up).

Hold it until it's red THEN I shut off my powerbar to cut the power completely. (thus saving pennies in electrical bills)

Phantom Load will get you if you don't get it first! Save energy!

I turn it off till yellow then, I flip the power switch on the wall which turns off all electricity to selected sockets to prevent Nintendo from doing the evil Microsoft force update >_>

I just turn it off with the Wiimote. Why on Earth would I hold it down? I wouldn't be able to get any messages! It doesn't use any more than half a cent to leave on for a week...

I found it heated up quick if the yellow light was there...

I hold the button on the Wii with my right index finger, until the light turns red.

If the light is yellow, it means that it's in sleep, and electricity is still running throughout the system. I remember leaving it on Yellow over night, and the system was warm. When I left it on red, it felt cold and unused, the next day.
