Would it ever be possible to run modern-day RPG Maker games on the 3DS in the future, once people figure out how to get it to work?

Is the ability to play RPG Maker games beyond 2000/2003 possible?

This is a legitimate question that I have, but as somebody who's enjoying a whole sluice of EasyRPG games to play on the 3DS right now, it makes me wonder if it's even possible to create an app that can forward RPG Maker games to your 3DS and you can play them that way. It would be a lovely idea if it's at all possible, but given the 3DS's infrastructure is literally as old as my nephew, I genuinely am curious how such a thing would even be possible. I mean, I'd love it if it turns out it can be done, especially as that'd mean that I'd be able to play some of my favorite RPG Maker games on the system (especially when, being entirely practical, the 3DS can run games that are far more graphically demanding than almost all RPG Maker games so the question becomes "how do we make this work for the system's infrastructure").

What do you think? Do you think it's at all possible?

Maybe you could, but it would still be such a pain, as compared to running it on a PC, screen size and mouse controls esp.

Yeah, I thought so, but it'd be really cool if such a thing was possible. Being able to play RPG Maker games on the go would be the best thing, though I can totally get why such a thing would be easier said than done.

Super Mario Maker is still fun on 3DS tho.

You know RPG Maker FES is a thing, right?

You can also emulate the old SFC version of RPG Maker, and probably even the Playstation version.

You can say that about a lot of things.
I'd try RPG Maker FES, but there isn't any games to download from what I've checked, unless I'm mistaken.

The official server already shut down last year. I presume there might still be enthusiasts out there providing their games for installation via CFW (i.e. Checkpoint), but I wouldn't know where those enthusiasts hang out.

There is an app called Neko RPGXP Player for android, which I've used in the past. That said, since many games use different engines and such, not all games would be compatible or would run slower. Now, it would take a lot of effort to do that. Would it be possible? yeah. Would it take time? no doubt, and with things like the Steam deck-like consoles becoming more and more available these days, there wouldn't be much interest other than "Yeah I wanna do it".

As for the case of resolution, at least RMXP outputs 640x480 and the O3DS has a 400x240 display, so that's a first challenge.

Totally fair. I just think the 3DS is an exceptional console and I think the very idea of its existence is really cool overall, especially as it's the best way to play 3DS games IMHO (due to authenticity; I get Citra exists, but nothing beats what the 3DS can do IMHO). But it's alright if it's not really possible; RPG Maker 2003 and 2000 already opens up thousands of games to be played on the system, so that's already a net plus to begin with.

I believe EasyRPG player has been ported to the 3DS, which can play RPGM 2003 and 2000 games, IIRC. You can find it at EasyRPG dot org (I'd post a link, but I don't have the required rank yet).

Edit: sorry I didn't see the "beyond 2000/2003" part. It might be possible, but it would require some doing.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
